Frost River in June

I'm heading up in two weeks with a group of six. We're doing the Frost River, putting in at Ham Lake, then down thru Long Island, etc.  After the Frost, we'll then lay over in either Gillis or Little Sag.

I was curious about the water levels this spring, and any comments or advice anyone has about that route for the second week in June.

And any comments on Gillis vs. Little Sag??

Thanks!!

I've dont the Frost River before and really loved Frost Lake.  We had low water when I did it and hated it (relatively speaking) !

Just returned yesterday from up that way.  Didn't do the Frost, but Paddle through Little Sag...Cool hole at the falls on the south East shore.

Best thing for you is that water levels werer awesome.  Water was high.  Quite frankly, some of the best water I've seen in years...so it should make the paddle throught the FR a ton better!

Hope you have a great trip!

Just off the Frost River, look for Bologna Lake (I think that is right).  We actually stayed at the campsite there.  Not much to write home about, but we had a great time fishing Northerns.  Nothing huge...but a fish on almost every cast.  We saw little schools of minnows jumping out of the water.  Almost everytime we cast into them we had a fish on...it was a lot of fun.

There was also was a lot of Beaver at work on that route.

Back!

Trip was great.  Water levels on the Frost were very good.  LOTS of beaver dams, tho.  Weather was pretty cold and rainy thru Wednesday, but our layover on Thursday on Gillis was outstanding.

Lots of bugs...

Portages were a way bigger pain in the butt than I expected.  Lots of boulders and none of the put-ins and take-outs were any good.  AND, if the portage between Green and Fling is 70 rods, like both Mackenzie and Fisher says it is, then I can slam dunk a basketball flat-footed!  That S.O.B. is at least 120!!

It was great to be in the woods again.

I'll put together an actual trip report shortly.

I too just got off a Frost River trip.  I loved it.  I recommend the trip highly but make sure the water level is up. Grin
