I'm sorry, there seems to be a problem with the bear sightings script that I'll correct now that I've noticed. It's one of the few that spammers could never figure out so I thought it was live. The fix should be simple.

Anyway, here's a recent addition I thought I'd pass along:

Name:        Greg
Location:    BWCA
Lake:        Disappointment Lake
Date         June 25, 2009
Time:        Evening
Quality:     Campsite Visit
Cubs: None
Personality: Persistent
Personality: I left due to the bear

Message:     Day two of a four day trip we were base camping and doing day trips from a campsite on the east side of Disappointment Lake by the winter use trail to Muzzle Lake. We had already passed up one site because a note was left by other campers that indicated a bear a cub in the area.

We had just finished dinner (hobo dinners...mmm...tasty) and were just finishing KP. My wife and six year old were at the latrine while I was fishing for something in our food pack. Suddenly, my wife and daughter are screaming while running down the path from the latrine. I heard one recognizable word -- BEAR! My six year old stumbled because she didn't have time to pull up her pants (the joke is our first line of defense was her "bare" butt.) They made it back to camp and I stood at the path to the latrine thinking that the visit was over. A few minutes later, we heard the bear in the woods to the north of our site. We banged pots and pans and it appeared we had scared him away. A few minutes later, we saw him on the south side of our site. We banged pots and pans and threw a few rocks but he just sat there as if he had been through it before. After about twenty minutes of trying to scare off the bear, we decided to pack up and move on. The whole time the bear watched us pack up and leave.

A note about this visit. After speaking with the forest ranger in Ely, we realized we made one mistake. We did not thoroughly check out the site before making camp. What we discovered while collecting fire wood the afternoon before the bear visit was a lot of trash in the woods including a broken glass jar, a forest service trash bag that had been completely destroyed, and lots of miscellaneous stuff. When reporting the visit, the ranger said always check your site before making camp. I asked if this trash filled site was due to it being close to the entry point and use by inexperienced campers and he said no. It was due to stupid campers.

The moral of the story is to ask the ranger about know bears, check out campsites before making camp, and don't trust the previous campers because a few can ruin it for us all.

Arrrgh! My modify button has disappeared... I had intended to link the 'stupid campers' comment to:

And correct the way my hanging my toothpaste reads. I keep it with my forks and spoons tied to a tree trunk at about 4 feet high (not hung with the food). Never had a problem....  Wink
