It's a crapper.  A wooden box over a hole.  The box has a lid.  If you let the lid slam shut it sounds like thunder.

Sometimes the "thunder" originates internally, not externally Grin
A steady diet of simple carbs/chemical additives to increase there shelf life, will often result in the " internal" Thunder Wink

I've never used a privy that wasn't a major fly/biting insect smörgåsbord ( for the bug) Cry

If it's not too gross, it's cleaner too.

As with the loss of all amenities, being prepared for it is key.  That first warm shower after a cold trip is as welcome as the trip itself.  My second best nights sleep is always on a trip, the best being the first night home.  More platitudes to come.
