Oh, and yes... Brandon is using my kayak paddle.

It can be done with a support structure underneath that's removed upon completion.

In a recent discussion (elsewhere) about Inukshuks that are built thousands of miles from where they belong I spoke up as a kicker instead of a builder.  This sort of rock building is not what I would kick, this is awesome!  Also a fun way to kill an afternoon.

I'd love to have wallpaper of that shot at the head of my bed and extending along the ceiling.

If DD stayed where I think he did, then the grove of birch COULD be that campsite.  What seems unfamiliar to me, however, is the "furniture".  That would be a new development since 2009.  We cleaned that site up a good bit last year but added no log seating.

Yep, that's a two man timberline w/ vestibule. My son got the 4 man version but like you, to much weight for me. I've used them for the thirty plus years I've been paddling.

And yep, this is on the peninsula across from the island campsite. It was a large area with several good tent site possibilities if I didn't take up have the space for my rain fly. The site was an easy paddle to some great fishing.

I'm packing for a mid-September trip, and I'm looking at the Aug. 25 web shot, the Aug. 28 fire shot, and the Sept. 1 "sun paddle" shot (as well as others), how I wish I had a modicum of the lens talent these shooters have.

Finally!  Up until now I thought I was the only one who took photos of our clothesline with laundry/clothing hanging on it.

As pajeff says, just check out the story & the pic in this BWJ issue.   Same danged ring at the Conk campsite, I'm guessing.

As written in the story, they were once used to tether the fabled and (allegedly) extinct Jackfish... which, of course, were puny suckers compared to pollyhumpers and some other fish I've heard tell about on QJ.  PJ catches & releases equivalent-sized fish regularly.

Anyway YOUR pic IS the BWJ pic minus the people & plus some flotsam & jetsam in the water.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that these rings were used more for the fur trade than logging.  It was something that trappers used to anchor their traps.  I have no proof of this - it's just a guess to possibly win the brownie points.  I need them.

No, actually our trip was aborted at Sturgeon due to some issues with my rookie bowman, and we exited via the Deux Rivieres and Pickeral narrows.

So, I have never actually been to Conk. But I have seen pics from those who have. Our original trip plan remains on my bucket list.

Thanks. It's the top quarter mile or so of the Fern to Olifaunt portage in Quetico. Nice place to spend some time with a camera. Long rapids like that are nice since it's impossible to get lost. Less to carry and pay attention to plus there's trails always to the best vantage points.

From today's photo of falls from the outflow of Telescope Lake (WCPP) ... I traveled the lake from Stuart Lake (west end) to Hjlarmar Lakes (east end) but don't remember these falls.  Are these falls on one of the north/south lakes? 

I do remember falls of this caliber between Edgar and Optic... but I could have overlooked a lot through that section since it was pouring rain when I went through.

wow, that cow moose in today's POD (11/5/10) looks really emaciated - ribs showing, hips sunken in -  I've hear that on Isle Royale, the ticks get so bad, several thousand on a single moose, that they can literally suck the blood out of them - could be that's what happened to moosey?

And "wintergreen" was my guess on the berries, also, but I don't know enough to say with certainty. I've been meaning to do a little research, but you know how that goes. I bow to anyone on the forum with superior knowledge. Anyone?

The most recent trip (mid- to late-September) seems like it happened two years ago. (Appreciate db posting the photos to bring it all back.)

I know wintergreen and have seen bear berry.  I know wintergreen is good to eat and the bear berry looks good enough to eat.  Normally we see tons of wintergreen on our trips, but this year not a one.  Great photo!

Bearberry is a groundcover shrub (woody), a sprawler like a creeping juniper(J. hortizonalis). I usually observe it in and adjacent to rock outcroppings.

Wintergreen like bearberry is a deciduous evergreen woody perennial(shrub), with a similar shaped leaves but the wintergreen's is larger and in fewer numbers. Wintergreen is also stoloniferous, think underground strawberry runners, bearberry on the other hand is not- it is a creeper rerooting as it goes about its business. They both have light pinkish bell shaped flowers, from my recollection. Wintergreen's berries are larger than bearberry but both are red. They are woody shrubs (woody perennials) even though they are ground hugging in stature.

The fragrance of the foliage is probably one of the easiest ways to discern the difference...

The wintergreen that I have observed has been mostly growing in acid duff that is well drained, moist, and with good snowcover in the dead of winter and some filtered shade in summer...actually most of what I have observed for colonies have been found on a south easterly slope in combination with pine (jack and red) and then in WI (on sand with oak and white pine).
