... would love to be seeing that above my fireplace with all the other animal and nature "artifacts" found and acquired over the years, but it remains at the campsite for others to see, hold and ponder.

... of course the mice and others might be feasting on it as we speak, as evidence suggests.

Lake 4, last day of our trip.  Campsite marked 10-15 Friday.  It was a little overused, but had a great view.

Otters here in N. MN are seen occasionaly.  I see them only in winter, and all winter in fact (this far S).  They really get active towards March melt. 
So I'm guessing (?) they do not hibernate?

Hmmm... I've seen several otters on various canoe trips in July & August over the last 10 years, most sightings occuring mid-day no more than 20' from shore in less than 6' deep water.  Pair on Crooked near the old Buick, pair on Cutty, one very inquisitive guy on the north pointing penninsula on Agnes (Q.) and a pair on Moose Lake near the twin islands.  They never seemed very shy (for wildlife) and were inquisitive and playful.

I've seen easily over a dozen bears but only 1 otter on trips.

I think I saw one of these once and maybe heard others on one maybe two occasions. Funny what's rare and what's common to different people at different times.

Incredible picture.

No offense to the object of your photographic interest but I hate spiders. I've seen many of these in the Q and actually had one running along a ledge at water level towards my canoe as I was fighting/releasing a nice Smallie. Damn near dumped the canoe. If anyone was on or near Bud Lake when that happened I'm sure they heard me. I've only heard of one instance of someone walking on water but I came close to repeating that feat.

To refer to a separate post, waking up with one of those creatures stairing back at me would be a trip buster because I would surely destroy the tent and probably break at least one necessary limb making a hasty retreat. I would much rather deal with a bear.

 I took this one on HoHo's dock on East Twin Lake, but these are quite prevalent in canoe country.  These are the ones you might see on land.

Actually the one in the POD is a water spider, and I don't think it would be around to threaten you unless you were in the water.

I used to be terrified of all bugs.  It was a family joke, "Lynda's bug scream".  That is one thing that the combination of canoe-tripping and macro-photography has effected a huge change in my makeup.  I now can see the beauty in the small creatures, and I find them actually to be the most fascinating of photographic subjects.  In my last trip report I had a photo of a pine bark beetle that I think is a classic.

Yes, Karl (Starwatcher) the dock spiders are often out on the rocks and I love to see them/photograph them.  I am currently looking for a photo I took of one that seemed to live on the latrine at one of our campsites.  It was the biggest one I had ever seen, and I will admit it would give me pause when I had to visit the biffy.  I did, however, make its acquaintance and learn to adjust to its presence. . . .  

As I recall, we stayed at that site for two nights and it was still there when we left.  I have a rule that I don't kill any insect in the canoe country unless it is on my body, in my tent, or is a mosquito/tick/blackfly.   

I don't believe that the webs like in today's POD's are made by the dock spiders, but I could be wrong.  Spartan1 was a dear to work with me to get the web photos--they were taken from the canoe and involved a bunch of "hold it more still!", "a little closer", "a little more to the right", etc.  It's really hard to photograph a web without having the camera on a tripod.  And that was before I had an IS lens.

Trust me Lynda, I am never in the vicinity of spiders long enough to kill them. I can deal with any other creatures/critters and certainly subscribe to the live and let live philosophy. My fear started on a Canadian fishing trip as a kid trying to line a boat (not a canoe) up some rapids. I put my hand on a log to maintain balance and had a spider, much like the dock spider, crawl across and completely cover it. I let go of the rope and after regaining composure had to swim after the boat. I did walk on water that day and have been terrfied of the beasts ever since.

Just because I mentioned it before, here is the infamous "biffy spider" that kept company with me for two days at a campsite on Lac La Croix in 2005.   I think it was probably the biggest one I have ever seen, but it wasn't at all aggressive towards me.  We played a game of "live and let live".

Those are some of the biggest spiders in nature.  I'm not fond of spiders, although I know they serve a huge purpose in nature. I've never been bit by a fisher spider and I agree that I wouldn't kill any critter unless it invaded my space.

I worked on a project in east Texas this summer and had spiders everywhere;  black widows, brown recluse, those huge garden spiders and banana spiders; I made sure I never placed my work clothes or equipment on my bedding.  I had a plant in Oklahoma and used to see tarantulas crossing the road when you drove down the country roads; looks like a huge guerilla hand running across the road.  

By the way, thanks for the photos; it helps keep my sanity during the dead of winter.

We didn't realize it was there or I might have made an effort to get a better photo.  This one was just shot quickly from the canoe, and I needed a better angle.  After we got home and I did a little research, I discovered that there is chatter about this subject and I wished we had checked it out a bit more.

We just looked up and said, "Wow!  Look at that!" and I snapped one shot.
