Personalized Picture: (avatar) show yourself

I get this question every so often:
"Wondering about an avatar. I cut and pasted from picasa a pic I wanted to use but no dice. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?"

The pictures of individual humans (example directly left of this post) need to exist on a server connected to the internets that will allow it to be used. For example QJ doesn't allow pics hosted here to be used elsewhere...

That said, if you want to attach YOUR smiling face to your posts here on QJ, attach the pic you want to a post in this thread and link to it. Pictures need to exist (freely) on the web for them to display. Linking to one on your hard drive will only work for you.

I'm sorry, this is one of those simple things I can't begin to explain properly. Hey Wally, any tips?

Personally, I'm not good at names. I get them confused. Pictures I can remember forever and I'll crop and reduce any posted here w/o notice or apology to make things go smother for all. If you can't follow my directions, email it to me and I'll make it so.

This is so not working for me and yet I want, nay, need to be able to accomplish it. Isn't picasa on the web?

You linked to a page. Images will normally end with .jpg

Paste the image url in the form field
Code

Apparently, it is.

You need to get to the file property [I can right-click to do that].  In any event. you need to find the exact file reference, which for this photo is:

I don't understand how to get where I need to go. DB says all I provided is a link to a page.

DD says I need to get the "file property". Not only don't I know what a file property is I don't know how to find it. All I see is the link in my browser when I go to the picasa page that has the pic. When I click on the picture another set of symbols appears. I have tried both without result.

I am curious and perplexed all at the same time. Undecided

What did you use on your Mac instead of a "right mouse click" when we were talking about copy/paste of GPS Waypoints ... It would likely be the same thing here.  On my Windows based system, the right-click produces a pop-up menu ... file properties is the last option shown.  When you open the file properties, you will see the file reference shown in my last post ... its just a copy/paste from there.

Interesting. On the Mac I have a bar above the browser. There is a file option and there is an edit option. The edit option is where I cut and paste stuff. I never go into the file option.

Select this URL by clicking and dragging over it or clicking three times quickly:

Code
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_aLQbInRJsGU/TS76AWFWooI/AAAAAAAAAMU/APA4FJ7_sd4/s128/IMG_0008.jpg

Now copy the selection to your clipboard:
(command c, or use the edit menu at the top of your screen to select copy)

Then go to the options page in your profile. Select the "I have my own pic" field by clicking it. (Make sure it's empty by clicking and dragging or clicking three times quickly and then deleting.)

Paste the contents of your clipboard into that field:
(command v, or use the edit menu to paste)

If the url is in that field click "change profile"

OR do it the hard way...
Open another window and just type it in by hand.

Control click on MACs brings up a Windows type menu. You can buy a 4 button programable mouse even for older MACs. I actually programed copy and paste for two of the buttons because I use 'em so much.

Done........not exactly what I had in mind but the little question mark is probably not entirely inappropriate since I'm sure some have, shall we say, "uncertainties" about my persona Grin. But Hey.......I'm an artist, I can get away with all sorts of eccentric behavior. Roll Eyes

A year ago I had never heard the term copy and paste. I have got that done pretty well for some time now.... I'm progressing Wink. What I'm interested in is the origination of the code. What you presented does not correspond with anything I have seen. Undecided.

Safari can’t open the page “ (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) because Safari can’t find the server “http”.

The page you linked to earlier has two pictures on it. Control click on one and choose open image in new window. Then copy the URL of the resulting window and paste it into the form field.

OR people can simply email a pic they want to use...

Since I'm there, I grabbing the smaller one. Change it if you will.

Works OK if you take out the extra "http://" code at the front end of the URL (address).

Second, reference items need to be readily available to the internet (not a continuous [persistent] connection, but "deliverable on demand").  Unfortunately, reference that look like file names on your computer are not the type of reference the internet is looking for.  That reference needs to be stored directly on the web somewhere.  These references are typically referred to as URL's (uniform resource locators).  This is just a fancy way of saying that the actual code (reference) will likely begin with something like "http:// ...".

Thus, you will need to select a "web hosting" site for your photographs or other material you wish to share with others over the internet.  Hosting services fall into two broad categories: ISP's and "share sites."  ISP's (information service providers) commonly provide services for a fee and part of the costs is used to offset the actual cost of storing your material.  In this scenario, your material has as least some minimal level of security.  "Shared" sites are often free and currently narrowly focused on the type of material you wish to share (e.g., photos, videos, etc.).  Security in this scenario is rather limited ... after all the intent is to share.

Assuming you wish to share photo's and you don't have an issue with security, you might select one of sites that you will find if you google something like "free shared photo site."  The process of making your photos (for example) publicly available involves copying the material from your computer to one of the hosting sites.  This process is commonly referred to as an "upload."

Once you have uploaded the file (containing your photo, for example) you will then need to locate the file reference (URL) at that site.  This is what you will use to share that material with others on the internet.

... and YES, it is overly complicated for what is involved.  Maybe our future holds something infinitely simpler.
