It is the remains of some kind of flower or seed pod that had matured in September.  I must confess I am not sure what.  They were all over the biffy trail at a campsite where we stopped for lunch on a day trip.  I just thought they were sort of interesting.  Now, thanks to you, I'll never look at them them same way again, Mike.   Wink
