This could be entertaining. What is the dopiest thing you have done while fishing? Since I'm feeling dopey about using light line with muskie lures I'll try and console myself by hearing what miscues some other folks have had.

I have done plenty. How about tying a lure on and tossing it over but finding out it was to a loose piece of line..........and then repeating the same process minutes later?
This one is the ultimate however. I know this is a canoeing forum but this is pretty good and
could be applied to a canoeing situation.
We were 75 miles offshore on a party boat snapper fishing. It was a perfect night with the moon up and no wind. Really nice out. Problem was no fish were biting. I was one of 6 guys lining the stern............middle of the night and no one is saying much.
I catch a blue runner which I decide to filet a chunk off and use for bait. Slimy rascals those blue runners and they left a nice coating on the gloves I like to use when I'm offshore. Well I had the corner position and wound up for a nice long cast..........pitching 6 ounces of lead on an 8' leader with a big chunk of bait on it takes some practice as well as some specialized gear. I had both. One thing I didn't have was a good grip on my rod and when I let her rip, rod, reel and bait made a rather loud sound on the stillness of the ocean when it landed. KERSPLOOSH!!!!!
After the initial shock one guy finally spoke up.........."would you look at that, it's floating"! Yes, my pelagic series rod was sticking up out of the water like an errant buoy. No one made a move however and I got a little hot......"aren't one of you guys going to cast for that rod" (I didn't know any of them)..............The cuban guy next to me that heretofore had driven me nuts by smoking a cigar, swearing constantly and basically just being loud and obnoxious rose to the challenge. On his third cast he snagged the line and we got it back. I gave him a bear hug. I had some claim to fame on subsequent trips as "the guy who threw his rod in". I had considered getting a T shirt made up..........."Yes! I'm the guy who threw his rod in" but I never did.....
Anyway, share your story about blowing the one that got away ( and breaking your rod in the process) or perhaps like my nubies who left their fishin reels in the truck and only found out after getting off the ferry at Isle Royale (thank God for the Isle Royale gift shop). Could be fun
