Looking for any information about the Long Island Lake area in BWCAW. Need to find a place for myself and my very novice wife for a 4 day trip in mid June. Is this area full of crowds? Looks easy to get to. How many campsites, fishing etc? I also have a permit reserved for Beaverhouse entry at that time coming to Cirrus. A lot more driving and expense. Does everyone think it's worth it or should I try the Lon Island option? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lots of people go to the BWCA and love it.  I'm glad they enjoy it and hope they continue to go to the BWCA.  Quetico and the BWCA are about the same size, but the BWCA gets 10 times the visitors.  Personally, I gave up on the BWCA years ago and only enter Quetico from the north.  Quetico is certainly more expensive and farther to drive.  But I think it is a variation of you get what you pay for.  As pointed out previous discussions, Quiet Journey members have a preference for Quetico over the BWCA.

We have taken several very good trips to the Cross Bay/Long Island area.  It is a nice area with small lakes, good campsites, and a strong chance of seeing moose.  I don't know how much paddling you want to do, but a side trip to Frost Lake is a possibility, and it would be early to swim, but there is a beautiful campsite on Frost Lake with a lovely sand beach.  Scenic even if you don't swim.

The southern site on Cross Bay is a nice one, and there are several good sites on Long Island.  I understand that there is a good site on the island, but we haven't stayed there.

Gordon has a nice campsite, and of course if you can get down to Cherokee you have the option of some very good sites and one of the most beautiful lakes in the BWCA, IMHO.

In our experience, in mid-June this area is not particularly crowded, and the campsites would be available with no problem unless you paddle very late in the day.

I cannot speak to fishing, as we do not fish.

Not all Quiet Journey members are quite as dismissive of the BWCA as the previous post might lead you to believe.  Some of us do, in fact, love the BWCA and plan to continue tripping there.  And that doesn't mean that we have never experienced the Quetico, either.

Well...I've never been to Quetico.  I like the BW and alos like to spend my money on this side of the boarder...but I digress.  I think the Long Island Lake area is a very nice area, just as Spartan has previously said.  You certainly have a number of entry point you can use, but for a novice paddler I would not hesitate to reccomend the Sawbill Lake Entry Point.  There is a great outfitter for last minute needs and a cold drink when you come out.  Cherokee and Gordon are both beautiful lakes and I also would agree that Frost is a fantastic place to camp (It just so happens that I think I have the Lake Trout figured out on that lake).

Anyway, that is a great area.  Send me a message if you would like some more info.
