Karl;

Where was todays photo taken?

Phantom Jug,

The location of today's POD is on a beautiful island campsite at the very north end of North Bay of Basswood in the Quetico.

I took shelter on another island in North Bay last week during a torrential downpour. There was a scarcely used and quite beautiful site carved out of the moss and rock. I was very impressed- beautiful.

I've seen sites with beautiful individual elements but no single site I could say that about. Got a picture?

I did not take a picture of the site. It was rustic, minimally developed, a small fire ring with vegetation all around it, the only tent sites would have been moss. Nice elevated rocky shore that tapered to a water level point. When soloing I tend to prefer sites that would accommodate 1-3 paddlers at most- sites that have fallen into dis-use.

Really pretty photo today, Karl.  Looks ethereal, almost otherworldly, the way the canoes seem to sort of float in space at the bottom.  I like the mood. Smiley

Like it! When I look at the horizon in the photo then tilt my laptop screen it is like watching the sunset/sunrise. The light reflecting off the gunnels make the photo. I bet you didn't notice the full effect until you examined the photo later.

I get what jimmar is talking about. Depending on the type of screen you're using, changing the eyes to screen viewing angle can change colors and brightness.

We're out of PODs as of the end of August so if anyone is interested in (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)...

I see it now on my main computer screen; I couldn't see it on my second screen.  Actually it's kind of a neat effect; like watching the sunset.

Pat, Great POD of McAree today!  I have almost an identical photo on McAree from 2008 on a calm canoeing day with similar reflections.

I've thought about taking along a "screen room" like shown in today's POD.  I suspect it's more viable for base camping than heavy travel, but even so the one I've got is pretty light - I've only used it in the back yard tho.

This was the first time we took a screen room Tom and it was great. It is big and bulky, but this was a base camp trip so the size and weight of the thing were not a problem. We spent the entire week on McAree, only two portages going in, one move mid-week, and one portage out. We traveled heavy with the screen room and big comfy chairs.

At times there were dozens of frustrated critters on the screens trying to get in. We had the entry/exit procedure down to about a second and a half, and if one or two mosquitoes made it in we tracked them down and killed them. It was nice to be able to cook and eat without the constant aggravation of the bugs.

Next year we will be portaging more, so the big screen room will be left behind. I have a plan to modify one of those nets that drapes over a patio umbrella to suspend under one of my silnylon tarps. It won't be nearly as roomy, but will be small and light. The one in the picture was neither!

We've used a 10'X10' "tundra tarp" made by Cooke Custom Sewing (CCS) for about 10 years.  It's size and weight is about the equivalent of a tent.  It has more than paid for it's cost and weight by making our June/July camping trips so much more enjoyable.  We sit inside, playing cards, eating, enjoying a cocktail, napping, visiting; with the angry drone of millions of skeeters just inches away!  We even took it on a recent Woodland Caribou trip, but only set it up once.  Along with small lightweight camp chairs with back rests, the tundra tarp, or screen tent, has made camping "civilized!"

This has been a really nice set of POD's.  I always start out my morning by checking in with QJ and the POD, and it has been a good way to do so.

Some of you know that I am rehabbing a newly replaced knee.  Consequently I am not getting out as much as usual (although I am doing very well--my therapist says "exceptionally well"), and my daily trip to the Q with you over the past couple of weeks has been most pleasant.  Thanks.

Hey Starwatcher where you headed? I am envious of your Duluth location (at least during the summer months  Grin ).......

Yes that pic is about as peaceful as it gets.......not a breath of wind. Of course scratch the surface and underneath that placid facade of liquid bliss there are all sorts of less than peaceful things happening.......quite the contrast when you stop and think about it.

Anyway, (on that happy note  Wink ) have a good one.

We enjoy the winter canoeing season up here, usually not too much competition for campsites.  We are heading out Little Indian Sioux and as far into LLC as we desire; then back thru the small lakes.   Hopefully not too much snow and ice.   Wink

Just days ago I was bemoaning my seeming inability to capture a focused, closeup photo of a loon to show my Kentucky brethren -- and just like that, a series of incredible frames snapped and POD'd by one of QJ's most talented shooters.

Nice work, especially the Oct. 1 frame.

Thank you.  I had pretty good luck with loons this year, in spite of the fact that our canoe trip wasn't that successful.  Most of my good shots came on Fenske Lake when we were staying there in the cabin with our grandson.  I suspect the loons there are a bit more habituated to having photographers around.   Wink

I agree nice eagle shot.  And truthfully yesterday's shot took my breath away - beautiful!!

Is it just me or are the PODs, in general, getting better?  Maybe more people take cameras these days.

Spartan2 has always taken great shots & I think she recently had an amazing eagle shot as part of her wonderful set also.

I agree. I think S2's eagle shot was better (more crisp and higher resolution) than my POD that's up today. Mine is a cropped telephoto that is a little grainy, but I think the eagle is showing some character.

Actually, both these eagle shots are way better than one of mine that's somewhere in the POD hopper. Maybe db will save me some embarrassment and pull the plug on mine before it gets out  Smiley

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to submit these great shots, regardless of which is "better"

The technical quality has increased tremendously since the first POD's. I use to do quite a bit of retouching on 90% of what I received. These days, I may do a little of what I think would improve things, sometimes, and then I cut my changes back by 50%. FWIW - I still display everything people send me.

P.S. The cumbersome voodoo I knew so well once upon a time has changed for the better too.

Your photos, jimmar, have been a joy to see these past few days, and today's is no exception.  I always love those silhouette shots!

I am currently sitting in the dining area of our little lake cottage and my Fenske Lake eagle is on the wall, looking over my shoulder.  It is one of my all-time favorites.  But I thought yours was stunning, too!  Fun when you can catch those moments!  The best part of it for me this time was that our seven-year-old grandson was in the canoe with us.

I enjoy starting my day off each morning with a stop in at QJ for the POD.  Thanks db, and all who submit their canoe trip memories.   :dankk2

Is it just me or are the PODs, in general, getting better?

The technical quality has increased tremendously since the first POD's. I use to do quite a bit of retouching on 90% of what I received. These days, I may do a little of what I think would improve things, sometimes, and then I cut my changes back by 50%. FWIW - I still display everything people send me.

P.S. The cumbersome voodoo I knew so well once upon a time has changed for the better too.

DB' what is the size restrictions on a POD.  Seems like you use to restrict them to 250K...Any limit now?

Actually, the model shown is a commercial product available through "Old Scout Outdoor Products."

I'll take whatever people send and make them 600 pixels wide. They end up averaging around 65K depending on detail.

The 250K number is just for posting shots with a post. Let me know when it it's full and I'll shrink some of the fat ones to make more room.

... this about the 11-17 POD.

I might be late to the game, but that red-tipped lichen appears to be Cladonia cristatella, also known as British soldier.

I submitted a similar POD after a September trip (but due to the array of beautiful shots submitted ahead of it, it must be far down the queue).

Beautiful little thingies, ain't they? Not quite small-world photomicrography, but close enough for this layman.

Keep in mind I've seen them all before so don't hesitate to post when it says there's no picture for today two days in a row. Email is nice too and normally suffices. I check the site well before email though and I didn't notice Lynda's email until tonight. Go figure. I thought it was loaded until Christmas but alas, it was just Dec.

Nice big moon!

I think she is a little stiff today after participating in a host of activities at the Rose Bowl yesterday.  But, I'm thinking she is OK with that since Michigan State WON!!!

I'm just fine, guys!  Knee replacement was August 12th, PT was rather tough at first but I worked hard and the knee is doing quite well.  I may have stressed it a bit on the Rose Bowl excursion, but I am not noticing any ill effects today.

We just returned this evening from four days in California, and we had a great time at our third Rose Bowl.  Watching our team win made it especially fun!   Grin

I meant to ask, regarding the last note on the Bloodvein pics, whether they were taken west of Woodland Caribou Park, (NOT QP!) on the stretch between the WCPP border and Lake Winnipeg.

This was primarily a ww trip (the reason for the plastic canoe), so I didn't even bring a fishing rod. I know, heresy to most of you, but I am less of a fisherman than most QJers, and my canoe partner doesn't fish, so I figured why bother. More opportunity to lose things when we get dumped.

There is a portage around every stretch of ww, and we were portaging around most of the Class III's and up, so yes there were a lot of portages. All were fairly short and in good shape though, so the portaging aspect of the Bloodvein part of trip was pretty forgettable - in a good way. (Getting there was more challenging: there was still a lot of blowdown on parts of the Obukowin and Craven-Ford-Artery portages. It was good to get that over with at the beginning of the trip).

No trip report due to time constraints, sorry! But if you're thinking of this for the future, get Hap Wilson's Manitoba book for ww details. For other stuff, there's lots of info available on the web. PM me, and I'll answer whatever questions I can.

Yo Starwatcher,

Starwatcher, Tom T, MuleLars and prouboy,

Thank you for the comments on the Jan. 14 POD. That shot was taken on one of the glorious cliffs along Agnes, looking down at two friends who were slaying smallmouth. It's one of my favorite little spots in the park. There's a tree to provide shade, should I want it, and sit against. I like to hike (OK, climb) up there, then read, drink some bourbon and just breathe deep.

Given the weight of impending deadlines (the past two months have been horrendous, as you could tell from the delay in my acknowledging your gracious and generous compliments) I wish I were back there now.

-- kypaddler

KY, I feel for you, seriously.  So, if you can't climb a cliff along Agnes, how about climbing up to the roof of your house (ladder is okay), then sit, breathe deep, and take a sip or two or bourbon??  Not too many sips, as that ladder could be dangerous...

Thanks Lynda.  My wife asks me why I take photos, as each trip's photos are all the same: fish, lakes, food, sunsets.  I hate it when she's right.  So this past year I worked hard at looking at things a little differently.  Your comments were affirming, and much appreciated.

Ouch!!

Judging by what I see today, that's been there for an hour or two at least. It also looks like a barbed treble.

Knocking on wood...

Cry For me, that's another good reason to go barbless. The hook in my accident was large and barbed, could only be remove via scalpel. Luckily it was the last day of the trip.

Has there ever been a QJ thread on hook insertion / removal stories???

Oh man.... I'm so glad the Q went barbless.  My trip last year had me burying a single hook into the webbing between my fingers.  I simply backed it out and it never even bled.  Now, if there was a barb there I would have been in a world of hurt.

I say go barbless no matter what.  That pic is painful to look at. But a good one to boot!

Yeah, while the others debated how to get this nasty treble out, I snapped the pic.  Then I started watching the face of the guy who had the hook in him....not wanting him to faint!   I suggested he sit down, and we eventually got the damn hook out.  It all started when a small northern he was bring in, jumped into the boat, up against his arm!

YES!!

And in the process of getting the fish off his arm, he got another treble hook embedded in the cuticle of his thumb.

I seriously thought the guy was going to faint.

Lots of drama.  But it all ended well.

That is the worst case scenario.  The biggest pike I ever had on - well over 40 inches - swallowed my crankbait deep in it's mouth.  I didn't have a net or a grippers and usually would lift big fish out from under their jaw.

Well, all I could think of is getting hooks embedded in my hand while attatched to the head of a 15-20 lb. pike. Yikes! Never tried it and he broke me off.

No R2-D2 relation -- I don't do well having to pick a username quickly & I didn't know how long it'd last -- I thought I'd read the forum for a couple weeks or months.  Now this is my 9th year on QJ & I've thought about changing that name because it's not the most meaningful, but at the time struck me as a good one.  I was in serious obcessed/dreamy/planning mode about this place...

and liked their little tag line near the top of the page.
Contracting the reference seemed to work as a username & now I'm stuck.  Of course it's not all that appropriate for Quetico anyway, that'd be more like:

I started going "barbless" years ago while fishing for stream trout. Much easier to let trout go without damage. Once I learned the key to barbless fishing, keeping tension on the line at all times, I didn't lose many fish.

All my stick/baits have only the rear trebles and most have been replaced with the NeverSnag trebles I'm so high on.

There a 2 treble hook design and with the weed guard feature, it would be pretty hard to snag yourself or others.

All's well that ends well, but aside from the stories and removal tips, a treble in the wrong place could end or put a serious damper on a trip. Not counting the risk of infection or worse that could develop.

Mike,

Speaking about "mind's eye"... today's pic, is it north side of Pickerel near entrance to Stanton Bay?

I realize there's got to be 1000 spots that look like THAT one but the background certainly triggered a flickering memory for me.

Oooh... that looks like it had an undesirable outcome.

I once had a nice brand new Sawyer Solo (Autumn Mist)wrap itself around a rock.  The power of water is surprising to the uninitiated. Respect is my mandate now.

I don't know the story, thank God.  We were portaging around a rapids on Artery Lake, on the western edge of the WCPP, on the Bloodvein flowage.  We wanted to get to the western edge of the lake, to the Manitoba border, where the Woodland Caribou Park abuts the Atikaki Provincial Park.  This fishing boat was stuck in the rapids that necessitated the portage.  On the other side of the portage we saw three or so fishing boats with small (20HP) outboards fishing the riffles.  There must be an outfitter camp somewhere nearby.

That was an unnamed river in Nuvanut, north of Baker Lake. That slab of rock was nearly 6' tall and just left of center you might see a few red pixels, that's our canoes.

We didn't spend the night there, just a lunch stop. Today you can see it was built into the side of a hill and how big it was. Just enough for some shelter. The river made a bend there so the surrounding hills blocked the winds on 3 sides.

These pictures are from 3 different trips, Back, Coppermine, and an unnamed river north of Baker Lake kind of paralleling the Meadowbank.

I think you're right jimmar.  P-humpers (as they are called in the biz) spawn in May when surface temps are at around 50*.  Immediately after the photo shoot, it slithered up the shoreline and at about 100' from the waters edge, emitted the most foul cloud of spawn . . . nevermind.

Thanks Spartan2; the Swans were pretty far away for my 200mm lens; I think I need to borrow that nice long distance lens that you use for wildlife. Smiley  We usually see Swans on our Fall trips.  Minnesota has been very successful in re-establishing them with the non-game wildlife program.

Actually, all I have is a 200mm.  Years ago I used a 300, but with my 7D I only take my 70-200mm L-series lens because it is an IS lens and it is more stable for hand-held shots in the canoe.  I just crop my shots.   Wink

Your swans were just right.  We have never seen a swan in the BW.

I know I sent this one in and I don't think it has been used yet.  If so, it will be a repeat, and I apologize.

It's from the Yeh to Lonely portage. August, 2012. It was an interesting walk on a layover day. Wink

DB's pic reminds me of a portage in Woodland Caribou Park.

I swear my 73-year old friend who introduced me to canoe country, could remember every portage, let alone lake of every trip we took.  But finding his car in the mall parking lot...not so much.

I did that portage a few years ago & don't remember it being that nasty looking!  It was looooooong & wet in a number of places - that just looks worse than I recall.

I guess it was 25 years ago, now that I think about it...  Shocked  ... portages change.

PS: Puckster?  When did that change happen?

Nope.  That was an angry Batchewaung looking south from the portage.

It wasn't until I got home and reviewed my photos that I realized I had shot exactly the same view on the two days.  But it was quite a contrast.  It was a rather disappointing trip for us--we went in preparing for a 6-day base camp and ended up bailing after 3 days due to a combination of cold weather (more than we were prepared for), forgotten rain pants for one of us, and Neil being ill for two days with an intestinal upset.  It just was a trip with lots of problems.  And then the nice, sunny day was the day we decided to call it quits, so there was some irony there.   Cry

It was one of the most spectacular weather events I have ever witnessed. I had the camara set up on the tripod because I thought a thunderstorm might be coming in and I wanted to try to photograph some lightning.  Instead of that, we got these cloud formations for about a half-hour--I shot about forty frames and they are all as dramatic as these.  It was constantly changing and just breathtaking to watch.

Finally, it was followed by a rather unspectacular thunderstorm, not much wind, and clearing before the sunset hour.

We were mesmerized sitting on the deck at the motel, watching the clouds forming and reforming over the Big Lake.  Superior gave us a great show that evening.

That's pretty impressive Spartan2!  I wouldn't want to see that coming my way on a canoe trip.  My canoeing friend was on a trip with Scouts in the Quetico and had a storm hit them in the night that knocked down all the huge pines in camp.  One landed on a tent with Scouts sleeping in it and a branch impaled the tent and the sleeping bag of one of the Scouts; miraculously no one was injured.

That's my son! that picture makes me smile.

You should be in the canoe when he casts those huge baits and starts working them. The boat rocks and moves towards the bait as he retrieves. Not my type of fishing, my tired old arms can't take it, but I've learned to tolerate my son's exuberance.

They swear by the big baits and I've seen them work. But... my biggest fish was a 45" NP on a 1/4 oz. jig with a 2" plastic minnow using 6 lb. test mono. and oddly enough my tackle toting son was in that same canoe with me when I landed it.

Jimmar,

I'd hate to get one of those monster lures imbedded in me by an errant cast, but I guess sitting in the stern is the safest place to be. Wink

I met a guy in the Q, who used only yellow/white curly tails and a few different weight jig heads and said he'd caught every one of the Grand Slam and some big fish as well.
Makes you wonder who's really doing the "catching".

I just bought a few of these for my Sept trip.
Sort of a cross between a soft bait/spinner.
Plan on using 5" Zoom Flukes and troll them.

Giant exposed hooks......my muskie arsenal has my attention, lots of lures in the ten inch and above range. I wore a rapala magnum like in the POD once right in the palm (fortunately the fish did me a favor and self released).

The release plan includes shimano Brutus pliers which measure out at 11 inches. I'm also intending on slipping on a lindy glove for good measure.

Worst case scenario include some Klein wire cutters , heavy duty, which can cut a hook out of a fish or some flesh if need be.

Ironically the only time I had a hook embedded in me (my thumb) was from a F-18 Rapala back in the barbed hook days.

I had my Leatherman handy and cut the the end of it off and released the  15+ LB Northern that was also attached. The Atikokan hospital, a common sense doctor, scalpel and credit card was all it took to remove it.

Thank you, kypaddler.  She's eleven years old, and we have been taking her up to the canoe country since she was four.  She loves it almost as much as we do.  I really wish we had the health and mobility (and felt confident) to take her out into the wilderness with us, but we don't want that responsibility at this time in our lives.  I keep hoping that her parents will take her some time.

Taking her up for a cabin week is lots of fun.  This year our week was all cloudy, rainy, misty, foggy, and overcast, so we really longed for a bit of blue sky and sunshine, but the nice thing about taking a vacation with Anna is that she brings her own sunshine with her wherever she goes.  We had a wonderful time.   Smiley

It might have been the moment-in-time capture, but she seems "queenly" in that pose. Very regal.

Lynda, I can't believe how much bigger Anna is from the first set you posted seemingly so few years ago!  What a great experience for her to do these trips with you!!

Thanks jimmar, the beauty of tripping with my wife every other year is that we do a lot more traveling than the fishing trips with my buddy so lots more photo opportunities.

That tarp, is a version of what's known as a "Dry-Fly".
Basically it's a 3-sided tarp. I bought mine from Kondos Outdoors.

I bought it after reading about a couple in the BWJ who raved about them.
The idea of being able to have wind/rain protection on 3 sides and setting up close to fire so the tarp acts like a reflector oven appealed to me.

One modification I made that made it easier for a solo paddler to deploy, was the addition of more ridge line straps. It comes with 2, one on each end of the ridge line.
I found that setting up when the wind was really blowing was a chore becasue it's a good sized tarp.
I added the additional loops, and attached some carabineers to them.

I pick my campsites primarily by them having suitable flat areas around fire pit.
I stretch a line between two trees, that allow me to position the tarp so the drip line is at the edge of the fire pit.
Clip the carabineers, then stake out the rear and secure the additional guy lines.

I use a solo tent, but you could easily put a  2 person tent under it with plenty of room for both parties and their gear on each side of tent.

First thing up last thing down. I'll cook under it if need be, you can use tarp over hammock if you need too, and best of all, I can pack all my gear up in a rain and keep it dry. Last I pack Dry-Fly on top of plastic liner under the top flap.
Weighs around # 3 and that's with the guy lines which are made of  reflective cord I got from Cookes Custom Sewing.
For around # 6, I have my tarp/tent/hammock set-up that gives me options for just about any situation.
No trees?, no problem. I've used my 2 piece double canoe paddle for uprights in a pinch.

I consider it my # 1 piece of outdoor gear.

On Cirrus lk, the upper section. Colors were just starting to pop and that red just stood out like a flag.

Thanks, ST.

I thought I recognized the spot, but I was wrong. I have almost identical shots -- same kind of red tree, same shoreline -- from a cover on Dack Lake.

That's the sand beach/campsite on Beaverhouse to the south of the inlet to the Quetico River.

I've stayed/stopped there numerous times but never noticed it before. I don't know if it became visible becasue the fall water level exposed it, or the wind/wave action uncovered it?

It must of been part of the steam/cable system they used to haul logs out of there before the park was formed.
I'd guess it easily weighs 1000#+ and doubt anyone rolled it out of the woods to try to move it somewhere?

Quetico Dave told me that at one time there was over a 1000 men building a railroad loop that was about 12 miles total if I remember right?

When you drive into Beaverhouse or Lac LaCroix, you can see trails leading off to gravel pits where the got the bedrock they used to lay the rail line.

They built the line as they went. That huge gear might of been part of one of those steam powered log rollers or used in some kind of cable/gear set-up.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Imagine the manpower needed and difficulty of building a railway and hauling logs out of that terrain.

Thank you, Ms. Spartan2. Something about that north woods sky ....

I spent the morning in the Kentucky woods enduring negative wind chill yesterday. The thought of paddling in September in Quetico seemed almost balmy.

I do like it. It is one of the luxuries I have added to my gear. As I get older it seems those luxuries become more like necessities, like my 3" thick sleeping pad. With this chair and my steadily decreasing agility I need to roll out of it rather than stand up from a seated position, but it is still worth it.

I won it along with some other gear from instructables.com for my cedar strip canoe project submission. This is it I believe:

This springs trip was the first time I ever brought a real chair. I liked it so much I knew I'd never go without one. Went with a different/lighter/cheaper one, but that's not the point. Having a nice comfortable place to sit around the fire or under the tarp or out on a lookout in the evening was great. When I was younger IF I had tried it, it would of been a "necessity" I enjoyed it so much.
I cut back on tackle/ few clothes items I never used but always seem to bring so the weight gain was no big deal.

We had never taken a chair, but a few years ago we started taking lightweight stools, which I really appreciated.  As my knees began to deteriorate I could no longer squat at the fire and the stool was a godsend.  But I was VERY resistant to taking a chair.  It just seemed wrong, somehow.

Then in 2011 Spartan1 won his fishing trip with Ramsey Dowgiallo (Wilderness Journey) and he came back after five days saying, "Ramsey always takes chairs on his trips.  It's pretty nice.  We should do that."  We went to Pamida in Ely and bought a lightweight bag-type lawn chair before our trip that very summer.

So now we take one stool and one chair.  We alternate who gets the chair, and I have to admit I do like it.  A lot.

When I was in my 20's and 30's, I loved sitting on rocks and logs, and I scoffed at anyone who thought something like a chair was a desirable canoe trip addition.  Now I consider it a necessity.  Sigh.  Sad

I never thught I'd enjoy having a chair so much. I taught it was something for newbies. Turns out to be just the opposite.  Plus it's comfortable to sit in while I play the guitar I brought along Wink

Hey jimmar sounds like your 1/2 way there on your profile....I suggest leaving off the part about liking to cuddle up with 4ft long, slimy, toothy, torpedoes.......And for your profile pic my advice is to go straight for the jugular and just show a 65" ultra HD flat screen  Wink

the Alite Mayfly chair is nice - I found one at the REI garage sale for $31 - it was missing one of the rubber "feet" on the back leg, which I got from Alite.  Probably a good idea to glue those rubber feet on, though it might be hard to get glue to stick to that chromed finish - I double check that they are still there when I put the chair in it's stuffsack.   No doubt, its not the easiest chair to get out of - there were several of them at the garage sale - more than one had been ripped in places from people just dropping down into them - so that's something to be careful of also - just ease into the chair rather than drop into it.

This campsite is R9 on Strugeon Lake. In lower water it has a nice little beach. According to Jim Clark at CCO it was one of Sigurd Olsens favorite sites in the park.

I believe this is the same campsite where KF and I stayed in 2013 and was recommended by Jimmar according to Darrel. I liked the site so much I gave much deserved kudos in the trip report.

The pic does not do the site justice in the least. A wee climb to the tent sites but the view was magnificent with water vistas in 3 directions. Skeets were unusually tough at this site and that was a bit of a surprise. Still one of my favorite stops however. Walleye can be had near a trio of islands not far offshore......landing superb.

I put some photos of this area in the gallery. I was there in 2010 with one of my twin sons and again in 2012 with the other. One now lives in Korea the other in Panama, so I enjoyed looking at these photos again. BTW the link title seems to have the wrong year...oh well.

Must have looked at my 2010 trip in the gallery. that was our best year for quantity of big pike. But last year 2013 we had a banner year for LT and had 2 personal records for pike, 45" for me and a 45" and 46" for my son.....however, mine was measured with a mark on the canoe paddle, since my son had conveniently left the tape back in camp.

I know you would hate to deface that gorgeous cedar strip canoe, but you can only take so much nefarious behavior even if it's your own flesh and blood doing it.  Shocked Grin Grin

You need to get one of these and figure a way to attach it so you can remove it easily? Can't let the kid(s) get one over on the old man , you have to as they say "represent"  Wink Cool

those come in 36" and 60" sizes...of course I would need the 60 in size and have to stick it to the bottom of the canoe. I've been using the plastic tape measure from my wife.s sewing kit. shhh! Shocked

seams  Cheesy to work well

Just waiting for one to slam that Rapala! Can't recall how many times that had happened in Canoe Country but it may be my favorite part of the retrieve.

I bought some of this stuff to have in my home repair kit. Used it on a broken shovel handle just to see if it worked as advertised. It did work, and better than I thought it would. Handle wasn't broken cleanly in two, it was split on a sharp angle like most wood poles would split. I let it set for the full 24 hrs becasue I was going to use it hard, but at 10 minutes it was "hard set", and I probably could of used it sooner with some care? Might be a good addition to a canoe repair kit?

Grin Grin Grin

I posted that link to the FiberFix material, becasue when the current POD's started, it appeared to be a pic of someone doing an emergency paddle shaft repair in camp.

That first shot looked to me like some kind of fiberglass mat/resin set-up.

I'm glad to see it was just a DYI camp "rolling pin" instead.  Embarrassed Grin Grin

Two things, Mike.  First of all, I don't think telling us where the pictures were taken is "unnecessary detail".  I would like to know.  And I have been loving your last week or so of beautiful shots.

Hey Kerry -- Thanks for the compliment!

After ruining at least two cameras by getting them wet or dropping them, I bought an Olympus 770 SW about 7 years ago.  It's shock and water proof.  ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links))

Over the years this little camera has taken a lot of abuse!  It still takes great pictures but the viewing window has become scratched and it's difficult to see through.

So two days ago, I bought the "next generation" of the SW770, the Olympus TG 850 ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); I'm in the process of learning all the features, and it's already obvious this camera is quite a step up.  I think someone else referred to this camera on another post/discussion thread.  But I will miss my old 770.  I've used it so much and know it so well, it feels like an old, well-broken in, pair of hunting boots.  But I'm optimistic and excited about the 850.

There are many good cameras out there and the price varies as much as the features do. Can't really go wrong with the top ones as long as you understand it's limitations.

Another thing I'd recommend is not to take the rankings too seriously, until you actually handle the cameras. The top rated one's have similar features, but their lay-out design varies significantly.

Those camera guys are like all "tech" geek's, it's always about the latest/greatest, but not so much the "user" friendly design.

One of the cameras that I've handled was given a "con" mark was becasue the reviewer thought it was "clunky/heavy". I have thick fingers and those tiny little cameras and controls are awkward for me barehanded and in perfect conditions.

Add in a rolling canoe and maybe paddling gloves, I can't use them without screwing a setting up accidentally.

Those "clunky" oversized buttons are a plus for people like me. Wink Grin

Looks like a section of the Darky River I'm familiar with en route to Minn Lake.   I suppose that Angel Hair grass is pretty typical of streams over the park.

A few months back 60 Minutes had a report on how SPAM a food item made popular by the WW 2 GI's is practically the National Food of Hawaii.
Seems that it's a very popular food all around the world becasue it is super shelf stable and can be served so may different ways.

Other countries have their own take on Spam flavors, some might surprise people.
The report said that many of the younger people only know SPAM as being unwanted E-Mail. Huh

Now that the doctors are saying that their changing the cholesterol rules for food consumption, I think canned foods like SPAM will see a resurgence among people who were afraid it was too unhealthy.

This should get your motor running. Wink Grin

Those look delicious. SPAM single are a staple on our trips. Does anyone know if they are available in more flavors?

Nice one today Puckster. We had an eagle staking us out last year so my buddy paddled the carcasses to a rock about 50 yards from camp. I was ready, or so I thought, with the video camera. He took two strokes of the paddle after setting the bait and that sucker was gone! Missed a great photo op again.

A few years ago I got the duty of dressing my trip partners and my fish.  On the way back to camp I stop on a one rock island and my partner went on to camp.  I had 3 walleye to dress.  My back was already talking to me when I started so I was in a hurry.  I cut the fillets off the first fish and with out standing up flung the carcass behind me and I heard it go splash about 7 ft out in the water.  Next fish same thing.  Next fish did not hit the water but I did hear wings. Turned around to see an eagle flying away with the last carcass. Wish I had a video of that.

Thanks Pajeff, and thanks for patiently wading through all my photos.

I sent too many pics!  I guess I didn't think they'd all be shown consecutively.  I'd be sick of looking at so many of one person's pics!  I think the end is in sight.

IMHO, there is NO such thing as too many pics for the POD. Thumbs Upup I wondered about that consecutive picture thing myself?
I wonder if there is a way db, could somehow put POD’s on some kind of “shuffle” like a CD player without adding to the yeoman’s work he already does now?

That's a great idea to improve chair legs  Thumbs Upup
last year my son's chair leg didn't sink in but broke through the soil surface. the timing and balance was odd sending him to the ground where his hip met a rock.
I'd also like to hear the pike n bass n net story
no problem here with all the Mike pics in a row...enjoying them, thanks!

I've heard a wise man once say that there are two kinds of chairs: those that are designed to fold easily and those that are designed to sit on.  The Helinox camp chair folds and packs nicely.  The fatal flaw of the design of this chair is all the weight it forces onto the individual legs. I'm a little guy: 5'9", 150 pounds, and I can only sit in this chair if it's on bedrock or on really, really hard packed soil.  Otherwise, the legs drive into the ground and throws the chair off-kilter.  Frustrating!  But with a little PCV pipe, I'm working toward a solution.  Not there yet, but getting there.

Last fall my son and I were canoeing up Granite River, dragging a crank bait.  Got a hit, and like a pro, I said, "This feels like a walleye."  Yeah, sure. So much for impressing my son.

We soon saw that we had a little bass, which in turn was being consumed by the northern.  Surprisingly, everything stayed on as we netted it.  We let the bass go, and ate the northern.  The eagle-with-fish carcass POD a few days back was what remained of the northern.

Glad you guys have enjoyed the pics.  I hope that's the last of them!

Your PCV fix is ST-McGyver approved Thumbs Upup
I have the same issue with the legs on my cheapo Coleman chair on my Fall trip.
I tried it a little bit different than you did. I put T's on each leg. My chair legs are 3/4 aluminum and I used 1" T's. I used some duct-tape to wrap around leg so the T's would press fit on.
Works great around home at least so far. I went that route becasue I wanted to be able to straddle any rocks/roots and have more options.

ST -- I might try your "T" solution.  Keeping the cross pieces attached is a pain.  (I can't glue them, or I wouldn't be able to take the chair apart.)  If the "Ts" prevent the legs from planting in the ground, then that's the easier approach.

I miss my old LaFuma stadium chair!

Only drawback I see IF it works for you, is you don't want to lose a T, but that's just a matter of paying attention.

Is that a Kilt your rocking PJ?
Never wore one even though being 1/2 Irish it's in my Heritage.
All jokes aside how comfortable was it for warrm weather wear compared to say baggy style camping shorts?

Yup.  That is the Utilikilt. Basically a Carhart kilt. Wouldn't camp without it. It takes a few years to break in but I love it. Certainly not for everyone but I've become pretty attached to it.

DB enters that manually from descriptive filenames assigned to the photos.  My intention for chronological order was communicated by prefixing a number to the filename, which he dropped out.

It's just a matter of telling him what you want.  He has done the same with others in the past.

Wow, do you think you stayed at a lot of high use campsites on LLC, with all that furniture?  Are some of these sites accessible via power boats?

Puckster, that campsite was a bit of an anomaly.  Why the table?  Its a mystery to me.  Powerboat camp?  I don't think - too far back from the border for the knowing person to risk it.  Neither did the camp have a landing suited for boats (boulder strewn shore).

Ran into a couple of seasoned trippers on my spring trip. They invited me for a cup of coffee as I paddled by. One guy said that he like to find and build "camp" furniture. He acknowledged a ranger had stopped by and told him that if ALL needed to go when they left. He said he'd comply but didn't see the big deal since it was all dead wood he was using.

I think like nails in trees, hauling big rocks up for tables etc, it's someone's idea of what they beleive "camping" is all about.

I've stayed/passed by camps the Native People's have used and even some of them are less than "leave no trace" campers.

I think even some of the TP campsite people see that as "camping" as hard as that is to fathom. Huh Sad

Spartan 2 is the only one I know of who took pics. Posted in Copia Wrapup. If you want to be part of the action, come to the show. Cool

Today's POD adds a whole different meaning to the term "crack of dawn"Huh : P

I have the solution and will even spring for the 1st one. Roll Eyes

Be sure to watch the Video, I think is see a familiar “gluteal cleft” as the HR people would say. Wink

Now you know why his tripping partner the long suffering PASCANEL doesn’t feel the need to bathe when they’re on a trip together.

It’s a defense mechanism. Pascanels infamous Mohawk is actually a wind baffle that channels the “funk” back toward the stern seat. You know what they say about payback.

At first glance I thought it was Ned Beatty in a scene from the movie, "Deliverance."

Wow Bill, I was most impressed with the frying pan in today's pic, not Mrs. Chippy.

That is a serious pan.  I imagine one of the girls carried it, right?

I also imagine it was great to fry fish in it.

That is a beautiful canoe. Curious as to how much it weighs. Have only canoed in a Kevlar canoe so have no frame of reference for weight.

No, nobody volunteers to paddle with me.  I have to buy my friends.  And, once they are purchased, I MAKE them paddle bow.

Thanks for the inquiry about my boat.  That is a home built cedar strip with black walnut gunnels, decks and accents.

It is 16'6' long and weighs 55lbs.

I built it as a gift to my dad.  I love watching him show it off. :dankk2

I initially thought the same until I examined more closely.  The person seen in the shot is standing on a down (reverse) slope behind a jumble of rocks with a gap in the middle.  The foreground and background blend so nicely it looks like one continuous plain.

I thought it was the best pictograph I'd ever seen.

I find myself wondering from what spot TODAY's POD was taken.  Darky Lake?

Alright, I can respond to both of those questions.  The picture db has questions about, is in fact my dad looking through a crack in a pile of rocks.  This was in an area that burned North of Kawishiwi Lake.

Today's POD and the one from 4/13 where taken at Makwa Lake.  Pretty much taken from the same place, different perspective.

Thanks for the interest.  I really enjoy the POD's glad I could send some along.

Nothing is better than seeing young kids experiencing "wilderness". Thumbs Upup Cool I remember going " Up North" and spending ALL day in the woods thinking the "wild beasts" were going to get me at any minute. Where my "wilderness" was, it was only deer and coyotes, but in my mind it could of been Alaska.

Dear Mr. P. Jug,
I'm curious where the recent shots were taken.  I'm willing to guess SE Batch Bay, knowing that there's only a miniscule chance that I'm right.
Many thanks.

Believe it or not, these are from a 2012 BW trip up through Sawbill, Alton, Kelso River, Fredrick, Wine Lakes and back.  My kids wanted to take some friends on a trip but they did not have documentation to get into Canada.  I believe today's pic is at the NE point campsite on Alton.  It was a big site I remember and we spent our first and last night there.

Hmmm... excellent pic today but PJ clearly chooses to live dangerously.  That's the dorsal fin of a small pollyhumper cruising the shoreline, eyeing up possible meals!

Actually, it's not such small fry I'd worry about but, rather, Big Momma.  Little doubt she lurks submerged, nearby, patiently waiting for a unsuspecting moose calf to wade in for a drink.

This has been a great series of pics  Thumbs Upup & brings me back to when my two sons were young.  Of course, once upon a time, there WAS that 3rd son.  Sadly, he wandered too far astray into the water... when the fish were "biting."   Cry

Today's POD reminds me why I love my little Byers Mosquito Hammock so much. Wink Cool

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Even if you don't want to sleep in one, having a nice place to relax and enjoy the view( bug-free) or take a siesta is a nice "do-able" luxury.

For solo paddlers or maybe even a small group, that ability to set-up anywhere you can hang a hammock in bad weather gives you more options and let's you avoid pushing on to a decent tent campsite when you really should be off the water.

You did raise the bar kinda high YB. We are fresh out tomorrow so there is that instant gratification factor for anyone with memories to share. I'd add some but it took hours longer than I expected to place a descriptive label in the top right search box without it affecting anything else. (I hope.)

I sent some on May 6. Some are probably repeats from a few years ago. I'll have to wait 'till I bet back from Q to view them if they become PODs. .....leaving for my trip in a few hours.

Today's POD cracks me up Grin
That "bug repellent necklace" is the same one I take to keep the skeeters/flies from getting in my tent when I go in at night and also while I cook/dine under my Dri-Fly when it's raining.

Under a confined space where the wind can't disburse the repellent, it works really well.

New tried wearing as a "necklace", but if it works for you, then that's all that matters.
