Peak Blueberry Season?

So, can anyone tell me how this year's blueberry crop is coming along?

My small party will be in the park for most of the latter half of July.  We're hoping to enhance our pancakes & cereal breakfasts.

Also, tips re: productive patches along the northern tier of lakes will be most welcomed!

Thanks!

Might as well ask about fishing holes. Full disclosure: Jimbo is a cereal blueberry picker. Last time he and his small party traveled in blueberry season, they sparked a Belgian birch bark beetle infestation. The bears went hungry that year.

That island in the west bay of quetico lake is loaded with blue berries - specifically the south facing half.

Cirrus. Lower arm (just above Quetico L.). Campsite on northern shore but "west of channel" to northern part of Cirrus. I think it's campsite 32 or something like that on the old PCD....but don't tell anybody.  Wink

I think your timing should be perfect. Crop looks very good in spots- some berries starting to show color-purplish in sunny beds during my trip last week. Bountiful in many locations.

Jimbo,

Just returned from Bentpine and the blueberries were just starting to turn blue and ripen. A few south facing banks along Bentpine Creek coming into Sturgeon were just starting to become pick able.

You ought to hit "prime time" berry picking when you go.  It has been raining a bit up there and it was quite warm during my 10 day stay.

Blueberries in your oatmeal in the morning will be awesome for sure.

Last year I was on North Bay during the first week of August.  We stayed at a site that had this amazing patch of the blueberry shrubs.  Me and a young nephew literally spent an hour and half picking and talking.  Had a blast "hunting" for the little big guys.    They were beyond good and everywhere.  Good luck in your quest Jimbo.

A lot of good this information will do Jimbo he is in the park NOW. He can read it when he gets out.  They are just starting to get to be enough to pick.
