Since you've converted to hi-tech kayak fisherman from cruiser canoe guy, maybe you'd be interested in a, um, high-tech "accessory" for your new vessel?  Check this out: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .  I understand that lots of folks use them with kayaks.

It just so happens that I have one on hand.  It's in at least as good a condition as your Vexilar fish finder.  And guess what?  I'd be willing to trade it, straight-up, for your Vexilar... which I see you have listed "for sale" in the gear-for-sale forum.  Unbelievable, huh?

Of course, you'd have to be able to deal with its high degree of luminescent "pinkness."  Well, that's an advantage, right?  At least you wouldn't be lost at sea when, er... I mean 'if', you ever get blown where you don't wish to go.  No way the rescue team couldn't find you!

Anyway folks, you can plainly see that, if I am willing to part with a treasured family heirloom for it, a Vexilar fish finder is clearly worth its weight in gold.  At $50 it's a real steal!

That would certainly get in the way of all the accessories I have hanging of The Dreamcicle (my kayak, it's orange).  Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to decline.

I'm all about going slow, not fast.  I have a project to map some semi-secret lakes outside of the BWCAW, and I will be paddling about using autochart live on my Helix.  I will create the the only good maps of these lakes--as the existing ones were done with strings in the 1950's. Then I'm going to fish them smartly.

If anyone sees a bright orange kayak in a lake off the echo, paddle by and say hello.

So, after "averaging-in" all the time wasted going "off-course" using the infamous 'flamingo sail', you're actually proceeding QUITE slow in whatever direction you originally intended to head.

Quite often, in fact, you scarcely make any headway at all!

Hey, we'll keep our eyes open for you up north!

So...this thread is about wilderness friendly fishfinders. You might think that once again, Jimbos pink sail, the unsellable sale, was another off-course diversion. How wrong you would be. Until you've seen it work with your own eyes, it seems quite unbelievable. This is not about wind power, it is about fishing. It can be a sail or a drift sock  Wink . Most folks know that pink is an awesome color for waldos and lakers, the only two species worth your time in Quetico, or anywhere else in shield country. If bass and pike fishermen are offended, you have my sympathy.

I digress. Jimbo, that pink sail that won't sale is a fish magnet. Use it for a drift sock, but use mesh in the center hole, as the fish will be jumping into it. Even you, Jimbo, will now catch fish.  Wink Cool

OS,

Well, to date, I mostly just "catch" crap  Lips Sealed when it comes to my 'flamingo' wind sail.  Anything more would represent something of an improvement.  I'll take it!

Not to mention that it is illegal to use a sail on your canoe or kayak in the Quetico.

It wasn't mentioned because the suggested use is to be a drift sock. Fishing with a drift sock is still legal, even in Quetico. All you have to do, is put it out, drift while fishing, and reel in a sock full of fish, no live bait, and no barbed hooks. Cool

Tailcheif posted that his Garmin 151dv draws 100mA with the back light off and it can be seen in sunlight with the back light off.
