My favorite kind of paddling.  It's quiet, maybe hear a loon or a fish jump.  Awesome pic.

I love those misty mornings too BUT I remember one time I was paddling along straining to see landmarks and suddenly I was sitting atop a big flat rock far from shore.

I had to step out of the canoe, push off and climb back in. I always think about that on mornings like this.  Undecided Shocked Grin Grin

I vividly remember a morning about 3 years ago when we awoke to a dense fog on a day we were to paddle across Roland Lake toward our last positioning campsite on Iron Lake.  On that day, I was VERY glad to have a GPS handy, as the fog was so dense I could barely make out the bow of my craft.  I knew my paddling partner was nearby only due to the sound of his voice and the occasional swoosh of his paddle stroke because the fog was way to thick to actually see him.  Thus, we paddled across Roland toward Middle Roland ... almost all of that distance keeping our bearing by watching the directional arrow on the GPS.  Of course, as we got closer to the portage, we could also hear the sounds of the falls into Middle Roland and use that as an additional beacon.

I had only had this experience one other time, where I felt so much "in a bubble," not being able to detect any landmarks for navigation.  On that occasion,  I was in a small motor boat on a high mountain lake.  I left a small dock on shore and struck out for my intended fishing spot (without a compass or GPS), and putted along toward my intended destination.  After about a half-hour of this, I estimated that I must be getting close to my fishing spot.  Then I detected a faint image appearing, so I cut the engine and slowly drifted to the image.  Could it be another small craft out in this denseness?  I was nearly on top of it when I finally realized that the image was the dock I'd left a half-hour earlier.  Somehow I'd executed a perfect circle.  I pulled up the the dock and waited for the weather to clear!

Today's POD looks like db is headed for the leeward side of the lake right before he hits that big stretch of open water?

This is when you hope the wind doesn't shift and pin you downwind with no place to hide.  Wink Grin Grin

It's been many trips since I've seen a moose. 2007 I think.  That trip was in late September and I was solo on Moose Camp Lake.  I saw both a cow and huge Bull and the bull was making all kinds of noises related to the rut. It was fantastic but not a sighting since.  I listened to one swimming at night in 2011 but that's it.  I used to see Moose every trip in the 80's and 90's.

I've seen one almost every trip but sometimes it was so brief I couldn't get a picture. You know they are around as most portage trails have hoof prints all over the place.

Hard to believe something so big can move so silently when they want to.

It's not real far behind the campsite just south of Mosquito Point, Pickerel Lake, Quetico. There's a raspberry patch back there too.

Thanks, db, never been in that area but might have to go to get some of those wild raspberries, my favorite berry. If you've never had Wild Berry Bounce made with Raspberries you don't know what your missing. Wink Cool
