Stunning pic!  I've only seen green with white.  Was this taken in the BW? Just a hand held camera shot?

Saturday's and today's are looking due east on a new moon night in Q. Always on a tripod. This night was the best I've ever seen and I had no one to share it with. What you see is about what I saw but remember lights dance and undulate and there is a buildup in different areas of the frame over the minute or 5 minutes or however long I felt like leaving the shutter open. Here's a shorter exposure from earlier that same night. A truly great overhead display like that is like a gift from the heavens.

When they are white and green and far away I don't usually bother with the camera unless there's a nice curtain effect or interesting shape. There's one coming up that's like that. There was no curtain effect but it circled over time and eventually made a cool shape. Then later when the lights got boring the moon lit up the shore so that made it worth a few exposures as well.

Spectacular.  Was this in Quetico?  I've seen the lights several times but only while in Wisconsin. We've got 3 moonless nights on the Quetico trip in early September this year.  Here's to hoping!

So beautiful.  And they make me feel so bad.   Sad  I am turning 74 in less than two months and I have NEVER seen the Aurora.  Sigh.

All my photos are from Quetico. The Milky Way is pretty damn impressive around a new moon too if you let your eyes adjust a while. Afternoon naps help. Wink

My kid has seen northern lights in our backyard in the burbs of SE WI. She was not impressed nor should she have been but at least she saw them once. She wowed a couple of times while we were laying on a rock and staring at the Milky Way talking about life one night in Q. It was one of her bigger takeaways because I remember it being one of the first things she'd mention when friends asked about our trip. I assume most people had no clue what she was even referring to but it made me happy to hear.

First time for me was when I was 21.  Me and 4 other "dudes" rented a cabin in Hayward Wisconsin.  Lots of fishing and I remember we brought 13 cases of old style beer in bottles.  Why we would drive 7 hours with all that extra weight is beyond me.  My uncle worked for them and got us a deal I guess.  But anyway, one evening we did mushrooms.  Yes, THOSE mushrooms and went out to walk this abandoned road with our beer.  Next thing we know we're laying flat on the road watching the sky turn white and green.  Pretty darn crazy.  Grin

I did that one time too. I saw things turning colors but it wasn't the sky or at least I didn't THINK it was.  Wink Grin Grin

Nice reflective shot today.
Looks like one of those old Velvet paintings they used to sell at the flea markets.

Next to the lava lamps.
Yeah, about 14 I had friends up to the shack and we hitchhiked to town... 15 miles. Had to almost walk the whole way home. We laid in the road watching the lights. Spartan 2 never too late to see them. My best viewings have been fall.
