Hi.  Since the Spartans will be having the POD's for the next few days I wanted to make a comment about our trip this summer.  It was not a canoe trip, but a cabin trip with our granddaughter Anna, who is 14 years old now.  It was very special this particular year, as 2017 is the tenth anniversary of the first time we took Anna to the canoe country to spend a week on the Gunflint in a cabin with us (at the tender age of four years.). Anna was very much "into" the idea of honoring the traditions and memories of ten years during this trip, and I have included some shots from back in 2007,as well as current photos.  If you like the comparisons, and you would enjoy reading the entire trip report, you can find it on BWCA.com in the trip reports section.

We are richly blessed to have two grandchildren who enjoy canoeing with us, and who enjoy spending time in the outdoors with us.  Anna is developing a good eye for photography, as well, so I have included a few of her photos, too.

Even though I do miss the days of canoe-tripping in the BWCA and Quetico, there is great satisfaction in sharing the canoe country with the younger ones in ways that are still available to us now.  Our time at Rockwood Lodge, and later on at Naniboujou Lodge this summer was great fun.

I've really enjoyed the recent (last few months) of pictures from TomT, Solotripper.  And now it's so good to see Spartan2 (and even Spartan1) posting some wonderful shots!

Thanks all!
Tom

Today's POD brings back memories of little ST with his first fish.

It was so long ago the cameras were only black and white and made a big puff of smoke when you clicked the shutter.  Wink Grin Grin

Seriously though, what a cute picture!

One of the very necessary traditions of our trip with Anna to the canoe country is her fishing trip on Clearwater Lake with our friend Marti Marchino.  That first year I had contacted our friends, Bob and Marti (former owners of Clearwater Lodge and residents at a cabin on Clearwater) and asked them if one of them might be willing to take a four-year-old out for her first fishing trip.  Marti graciously volunteered.  Marti helped her bait the hook and showed her how to catch a few little fish.  When Marti asked her if she would like to learn how to clean the fish and have a "fish fry", Anna looked very serious and replied, "I think I would like to put the fish back into the water.  It just seems like a better ending for the fishie."

The fishing trip with Marti has become one of the necessary traditions on every trip.  We are not fishermen, and Marti has become a dear friend to Anna.  We take her to lunch at Trail Center afterwards.  That is fun.  But now Anna baits her own hook and even takes the fish off the hook to throw them back.  She is very tenderhearted and still would never think of eating one of her catch.  I am actually surprised that she wants to fish, as she worries so much about whether she is hurting the fish, and she actually doesn't even like hurting the worms. . .but she loves Marti, and she loves the whole tradition thing.  This year she only caught little ones, and Marti caught some bigger "keepers", but in deference to it "being a better ending for the fishie", Marti threw all of hers back, too.   Smiley

The series of POD's we are in now are from a day trip on Seagull Lake on the last day of our stay along the Gunflint Trail.  We had taken Anna up to the Seagull Area in 2007 to witness the devastation of the Ham Lake fire and to show her how the forest begins to regenerate quickly after a fire event.  We were now showing her what the area looks like ten years later.  And we also were enjoying a beautiful day on Seagull Lake, paddling along, stopping for lunch on a rocky point, and just looking around to see what could be seen.

Anna enjoys paddling, she enjoys taking photos, she enjoys seeing wildlife, she enjoys solitude, and she particularly enjoys climbing around on rocks.  Therefore, Anna enjoys the canoe country.  And it is very satisfying to share it with her.

The eagle was the highlight of our day trip on Seagull Lake.  We were paddling along and suddenly our "eagle eye" girl said in a stage whisper, "EAGLE!"   At that point, Spartan1 was the only one paddling, as the two other paddlers had their cameras clicking away!  We each got many good shots.  The canoe was bouncing a bit, and it was a good thing we shot often, as focus was a definite problem, especially for Anna with her little point-and-shoot.   Still, she was the only one who captured the in-flight photo when the majestic bird finally got tired of us and decided to make a getaway.  I missed the flight shot completely.

Yup, great shot by your granddaughter who needs a paddling moniker if she doesn't already have one  Wink

One thing about more than one paddler its so much easier getting moving shots like this when you don't have to worry about wind/waves.  Grin

I didn't take the shot today.  It was taken by my 14-year-old granddaughter.  (the one of the eagle in flight.)
