Yeah newbies get unrealistic expectations when they see all the pretty idyllic pictures of canoe country.  You have to love mother nature, she kisses you on the cheek one day and knocks your teeth out the next.  Undecided Grin

Ditto to ST's comments re: that boot-sucking gray clay.  Still one of my favorite entry points... especially when the BH wheel barrow is available for use!

In the pic from a couple days ago with OS sporting the blaze orange...
There's a lid that looks like it's from a rubbermade 'action packer' container. can you tell me how that container was utilized? kitchen stuff or food, etc?

Hi Tim,
I'm guessing that would be the top of a kitchen pack, belonging to OS.

That’s the lid from one of two action packer containers that held our food. One contained breakfasts and some of our lunch stuff, while the other held dinner sides and some of the lunch items. We relied on fish for all but the first night, which was steaks and baked potatoes. Cool

Those lids came in handy for fanning the fires as needed and also as a work area for meal prep. I was surprised that there was no picture of the infamous pink flamingo stew. You did notice Jimbo’s mascot behind Bo and me. It led us all over Quetico. It was on that trip that we learned to follow the bird. Wink

i have an action packer that has been used for a lot of things except canoe trips up north. was thinking that it might work nice as a food container but didn't act on it. it's good to see in the picture as a reminder. steak and baked potatoes sound great. i just finished up some really good beef stew today. somehow just can't get excited about the thought of pink stew. pepto bismol keeps coming to mind.  Shocked Huh Shocked

Too bad you weren’t on the trip! Pepto bismol was exactly the same reaction the rest of the guys had when I did the reveal. It was hard not to laugh when they were all commenting about how great it smelled as they approached the kitchen. Then the reveal...

For those wondering how I pulled it off, I sent everyone out fishing while I prepared it. I used flour for thickener and white color. I used Red food coloring, I had smuggled in to achieve the exact desired shade of pink. IC assisted but did not help in any way. Grin Chunks of laker provided the meat. Now the secret is out...

was the pink stew a one time event or do you really make it a regular on the menu?

The pink stew was a one time event. It was based on a laker chowder recipe which is posted in the recipes section. I added flour and a few drops of red food coloring to the chowder. Unfortunately, pink flamingos are too scarce in Quetico, and as such, are a protected species, so I substituted a couple of lakers instead. If you’ve never eaten pinks, they taste a little like chicken. Wink  Cool
