Even though we don't fish and I often get tired of fish photos, I have to say that this has been a very well-photographed and a very interesting group of POD's.   Thanks for sharing your trip with us Mk631!   Cool

Nope, I'm her better half.  She hates to sit in the canoe seat so I have to paddle her around like she's the Queen of the Nile while she sits in the bow.

PJ,

Today's POD is taken across the southern bay on Cirrus Lake, across from campsite 2Z, correct?  At the far-end of the shot would be that lesser-used, flat portage connecting to Quetico Lake... or, at least, that's my guess.

Dang!  I KNEW that looked familiar.  1J1 is a great campsite and one of my favorites... when the wind isn't blowing, that is.  That shot is from directly in front of the camp, where you can walk out about 70-80 yards or so into the water & still not be but hip-deep.

The 1J1 site is a great "family-type" spot.  Kids & wives can hang out & enjoy themselves while the guys get their jollies fishing.

Incidentally, I spotted a "Great Horned Owl" on the beach there once... except that it turned out to be an odd-shaped stump when we paddled in for a closer look.  Yes, it's a shame what "old age" does to one's back, hips, hearing & sight. Nevertheless, the vision of that owl on the beach was enjoyable while it lasted.  Interestingly enough, the other guy in my canoe - 10 years junior to me - "confirmed" my owl sighting when we were still 50 yards offshore... and HE is a wildlife biologist!  So, maybe there is an Ojibwe trickster spirit that hangs around that island?

It was far too early in the day for the Maker's Mark spirit (residing - at the time - in the blue barrel still stowed in my canoe) to have been at play....

Anyway, thanks for scratching the itch that POD created in my memory banks, PJ!

It is a nice spot and we typically grab it our first night from Dawson Trail.  The 4* rating is generous IMO but for fishing, privacy and western exposure, it is certainly worth a night or two.  The next few days of POD's will be in and around this area of Pickerel.

There is a 'chicken' on the shore at 3J on Cirrus too.  Paddling up at dusk, my then 8 yr. old turns around and asks; "Are there chickens in Quetico?"  "No" I reply.  "Well there's one at our campsite." he says.  Sure enough, the rock formation looked exactly like a chicken.    Grin

I love these tales.  I have returned to Gordon Lake in the BWCA several times now to see the rock with the big-nosed face in it.  Most of the people I know don't find it that wonderful, but for me it is like an old friend.   Wink

As I think most of you know, it doesn't take much to amuse me.   Roll Eyes
