Dang! I KNEW that looked familiar. 1J1 is a great campsite and one of my favorites... when the wind isn't blowing, that is. That shot is from directly in front of the camp, where you can walk out about 70-80 yards or so into the water & still not be but hip-deep.
The 1J1 site is a great "family-type" spot. Kids & wives can hang out & enjoy themselves while the guys get their jollies fishing.
Incidentally, I spotted a "Great Horned Owl" on the beach there once... except that it turned out to be an odd-shaped stump when we paddled in for a closer look. Yes, it's a shame what "old age" does to one's back, hips, hearing & sight. Nevertheless, the vision of that owl on the beach was enjoyable while it lasted. Interestingly enough, the other guy in my canoe - 10 years junior to me - "confirmed" my owl sighting when we were still 50 yards offshore... and HE is a wildlife biologist! So, maybe there is an Ojibwe trickster spirit that hangs around that island?
It was far too early in the day for the Maker's Mark spirit (residing - at the time - in the blue barrel still stowed in my canoe) to have been at play....
Anyway, thanks for scratching the itch that POD created in my memory banks, PJ!
