I'm guessing someone either went through the ice and this was the closest high land to park it once they got it out of the lake....or.....someone got horribly stuck in slush and this was the closest high land to park it once they got dragged it out of the slush.  Huh

My guess is it quit running and they pulled it up there to keep it from sinking.  It would be a long walk back to the village from there.

Today's pic was taken in Opasquia Provincial Park.  It was on EAST Lake!

You can only appreciate the humor of my location reference if you've been there.  East Lake is huge and covers a significant portion of the northern part of the park.  Paddling west, you encounter a portage of perhaps 80 rods running adjacent to a stream with white water ... only to find yourself on another body of water called ... wait for it ... EAST LAKE!  (The eastern and western portions of East Lake are otherwise only connected to each other by other portages.)

I was paddling bow that first day and we reached this point in the early afternoon.

East Lake was certainly all over the place up there, dd.  Take two or three portages and, yes, somehow you found yourself still on it!

I suppose that snowmobile could have been ditched there for any of the reasons already mentioned.  My guess is it came from the First Nation settlement in Manitoba, quite a distance to the west.  I don't think the Big Hook owners (our outfitter & about the only operation going up there) were around much out of season.

With luck, maybe the owners were paired up with another vehicle when they parked it.  Otherwise, whoever ditched it must have had quite a hike back to wherever.  That was about as close to the middle-of-nowhere as I have ever been!

Nice shot.  I find it interesting how we each dress for canoe trips.

TomT,

As MagicPaddler is sometimes partial to marching down portage paths without his pants, you should count your blessings that he is dressed at all in this pic!

P.S.  MP is no dummy, either.  He KNOWS that, by sitting next to a "fully clothed" DentonDoc, he is well within a substantial "permethrin radioactive zone." Skeeters simply drop dead in mid-air if they dare buzz within four feet of the guy.  Should the infestation reach Biblical proportions (as it did where today's POD was taken), he simply pulls out his infamous - and deadly - red handkerchief, impregnated with truly illicit levels of the stuff.  A time-honored nocturnal bug-fighting camp strategy is to offer DD a swig of your preferred beverage and get him to agree to walk to (or even "near") your shelter around dusk.  He simply flutters that magic handkerchief of his a few times overhead and - voila! - a bug-free night!

Mileage may vary!

I seem to remember having only ONE mosquito bite until we returned to Central Lake's Big Hook camp where I took a shower and put on "city" clothes.  Having removed/washed off all protection, I was "fresh meat!"  On the trip itself, I remember having a head net on a couple of times, while my traveling partners seemed to be living in theirs.  I removed the half-dozen of so skeets that managed to get into my tent, rather than the cup fulls experienced by at least one companion.

dd

BTW:  In addition to treating external clothing (including hat, socks and bandana) with permethrin (military soak), I swap out my daily supplement of fish oil with flaxseed oil.
