That's one of Quetico Dave's 2 half-feral cats that patrol his property and keep the vermin under control.

They'll come inside just long enough to beg some table scraps and get a little head rub then it's back outside even in winter.

They both have their claws because sometimes their eye's are bigger than their abilities. Dogs don't mess with them more than once either.

I watched Dave give each of them a small Walleye and 30 minutes later all that's left are the bones and scales. Wink Grin Grin

I've always had cats until my last one died. He was a Tabby/Maine Coon mix. Weighed 25 lbs and he wasn't fat. I rescued him and had him almost 25 yrs.

He acted more like a small dog than cat. Would even play fetch with me and came when he was called.

I bet that cat of Dave's has no problems ambushing small (or larger) animals with his built in camo-coat.
I once had a pure white cat (called him Weasle) who was in his glory this time of year; he could lie in the yard among the patches of last remain snow and would leap up to snag birds out of the air when they flew by. Wink

Just wanted to comment on Solotripper's pic of the rapids.  What a great shot.  I could sit there for a while and ponder.  Smiley

Yeah, I love the sound too.  Camping next to a rapids is pretty cool too.  I did that on the Falls chain at Bald Rock Falls.  Very cool but in the morning I couldn't find Luna.  I yelled and yelled and really was starting to worry.  I went up this path that led to the top of the falls and there she was. She couldn't hear me!   Shocked

I believe that is along the portage to Bisk Lk.
There are many areas accessible to the river/rapids along that portage.

I think some kayakers might run that stretch after the dam or maybe some canoers in plastic boats?

Not any decent places to camp on portage unless you're a hanger.

I always head to the sound of running water. Either for the photo-op/fishing or both.  Smiley

Today's POD is of the head Q Ranger at the time in the bow. A young Native Ranger is in the stern.

It was taken on Jean Lk. They were out checking campsites and portages.

They were just leaving the campsite on the Narrows on Jean Lk. They had commented to me as I stopped to talk to them about how they wanted to crack down on campsite improvements like those at that well-used site.

The gentleman in the bow seat and a helper checked our campsite on the Twin Lakes South of Dore'a couple of years ago.  He was polite, but all business.  Then walked all the way back down and carefully checked every pole.  We assumed for pinched barbs and organic bait.

That year I stopped on Quetico lake in the pouring rain and had just set-camp when they came up to check me out.
It was before the park ranger station was open so I had just self-registered in Atikokan.

As I had always done. I left the reservation on the dash of my truck so they would know I was there legally.

The ranger asked me where my park permit was and I told him it was on the dash of my truck. He was nice but he didn't like that. He said I should have it with me. I said then how will the rangers know I didn't go in illegal which happens more than people realize?

He made me describe my truck, color and license plate number. I said they should make it so there is 2 sections of the self registration permit, one you leave on vehicle and one to take with you.

He said he was working on that. Next time I went they had done just that.

I asked if he wanted to see my fishing license? He said no but asked if I knew about the no live-bait and barb-less hooks. I said yes, they wished me a safe trip and headed for Jean Lk.

He must of seen I have such a honest face so he didn't feel the need to check my fishing gear out like he did with you guys.  Wink Roll Eyes Grin Grin

I can't recall ever being checked by rangers in Quetico or the BW and this year is my 20th trip of a week or longer.
