That, my friend, is a smallmouth side dish, cooked over an open fire, with a laundry list of ingredients.

Smashdancer can really put the food together. No freeze-dried stuff for us.

We basically have a kitty litter box full of spices, oils and ingredients (dried tomatoes, dried shiitake mushrooms, pine nuts, rice etc etc) and he concocts mouth-watering dishes on the spot to go with whatever smallmouth, walleye or pike we caught that day.

Even though I infer your facetiousness, I may try to track down  the list of this dish's ingredients, if only for my own amusement.

Was fishing out from the piled-up scree in the shadow of the cliff featured in the Feb. 20 POD one time when my canoe partner badly hooked a smallmouth of about 10 inches.

It wound up floating belly up, and we noticed it was being eyed by an eagle perched in one of those trees you can see on the side of the cliff.

So we backed off, and then watched as the eagle swooped down and grabbed the fish out of the water right in front of us. The eagle was so big you could barely see the fish while it was being carried away.

It returned to the same tree, where we watched it dine.

That's a perfect set-up, water view, not to much sun and IF you roll out like I've been known to do, it's a flat drop to Mother Earth.

Hey MB,

The paddle on 3/25...on the left adjacent to your map...looks a whole lot like my Bending Branches Sun Shadow 14 bent shaft.  The Werner Algonquin showed up in the mail yesterday - almost floated out of the box...eager to give it a paddle.  Now where was that Spiderman portage at...aka the Wall? The 'tub' is great on a hot day...good timing...just watch out for the tiny little leeches...there were a bunch of them less than 1/2" long on a few of us.

Considering your route my guess is it is the outflow from Isabella lake. The portage would be on the right side of the creek behind the photographer.

I am a dedicated hammock sleeper and that looks like an uncomfortable hammock.  Bent like a banana and squeezed side to side.

For the price, I don't see how you could go wrong?
You can pick up a matching Gore-Tex parka for under $50 bucks.

Anytime you can get a GORE-TEX outfit for under $100 bucks, that's a good deal.

For what it's worth, I just ordered 2 pairs of their Nylon fishing pants that convert to shorts.

Regularly $30 for $18. I already have a pair I like a lot. NOT Rail Riders, but for the price if they last ONE hard paddling season it's a deal in my book.

This was the evening on Finger Lake in the BW that I unknowingly shared an island with NCTRY (Ben).  We were travelling in opposite directions in 2012 and he and Berniece (his faithful Chesapeake) took the 5 star site on the southern side of the large island in the channel. 

I showed up also solo around 4-5 o'clock and approached the island knowing the best site was there.  As soon as I saw color and someone walking there I veered off to look at other sites.  I ended up on the opposite side of the island on a fantastic little site perfect for a solo. It had sitting rocks and this fabulous view of the lake that evening. 

Now, I had known Ben was doing a 40 day solo then and would be in my area but what were the odds of us sharing an island that night?  We talked about it afterwards and realized we could have hung out a bit.  So the moral of this is to always go up and see whos on the site.  It just may be a board acquaintance.

It's funny how certain pics bring back vivid memories.  This is early morning after I left Ted Lake going south.  It's a no name that links to a mile long bushwhack along a creek that emties into Robinson Lake. 

It was September but the day was calm and got to 86 degrees.  This photo brings back my anticipation and also trepidation before the bushwhack knowing that if something happened to me physically in that heavy forest I would not be found for a long time.  I made it through totally exhausted but glad I did it.

Another great shot today, Kerry.  I always look forward to any photos that you have taken.  The sun shot was exquisite!

I love the POD's.  Now that we don't do canoe trips, I think I just come on here more to travel vicariously with you guys on your trips than for any other reason.  I enjoyed "traveling" with TomT on his trip and savoring some of his photos, too.  And Jimmar's.  And all of the ones before.  I wish I still had photos to contribute.  We will be going to Wisconsin and Minnesota with our grandchildren this summer, God willing, and I hope to get at least a few that might qualify as POD's, but they will only be north country lake photos, not canoe-trip photos.

You guys take me "out there" with your photography.  Please keep submitting them, even if they aren't your very best.  Some mornings it is the highlight of my morning decaf, to click on that POD and see that photo!

That is the full kit. Though for my last two solos I have added a CCS Rucksack and reduced the load in the big pack and accepted the double portage- My knees started complaining about single portaging.

I'm trying to figure out if I can reduce the load enough to single again. If I had the cash I could drop about 12# by jumping to a Savage River Blackwater; might do the trick.

Of course you're dead on. My commitment to single portaging was not absolute; if I felt stressed, fatigued, clumsy  or encountered difficult conditions I dropped the boat and came back for it. I realized I was trudging over the portages, that relatively minor obstacles required a gathering of resources. So I opted for three relatively easy walks to replace one difficult one. Not to mention the degree which dropping 20# from the big pack makes it easy to hoist in and out of the boat.

What I do miss is reaching the end of the portage and walking out into the water, setting the boat afloat, removing the pack and dropping it in the canoe, unhooking the yoke, paddles, and pfd, climbing aboard and simply paddling off. That, my friend, is sweet.

I would like to try a bare bones trip where I single like this.  I have a goal to buy a swift solo canoe with a carbon yoke.  I'm pretty sure I can pare down my load enough for me to single portage.  Right now my Blackhawk solo boat is around 50Lbs. with a heavy yoke.  Can't wait to go light.

Today's pic is the conditions I stand-up and use my double paddle like a gondolier pole rather than beat the reeds trying to paddle.

  I always get a little nervous wondering if eventually I'll run out of the floatable water and have to drag my ride?

Thanks Kerry. I wish it was a raven (a much better capture) but it's a red-winged blackbird; photo taken from my canoe, the burned white pine snag was anchored in the beaver pond between Argo and Crooked- burned then drowned.

Jimbo- today's pic is the cliff that hold's the Ted Lake pintos. Nearly identical to the Darky setting. I think it is both cool and interesting that so many pictograph sites are also home to raven nests  Probably due to similar topography requirements but I prefer more otherworldly explanations.

Solus, what camera setup do you use?  The color saturation and sharpness are really great.

Thanks again- sometimes it's just a matter of luck or being in the right place at the right time.

Photo was taken just after ice out. the adult female was blowing her winter coat. I paddled the Moose River to Nina Moose Lake for an evening excursion, came around the bend and saw the family. They let me hang quite a while before I left them alone and headed to the lake. Heading back upstream I passed a tandem heading in for the night- I asked if they had seen the moose and they had not, a few minutes later I rounded the bend and there they were again, still on the same flat. I stayed with them for a quite a few minutes, repeatedly having to paddle back against the current, then Momma gave me the eye and I let them be.

I came across a cow with calfs on the small island where Diversity Bay and the top of Sturgeon meet. Paddled by, drifted back… closer and closer each time. I stopped after she charged into the water after me when I got too close for her comfort.

We are now fresh out of new PODs btw. Hint hint
