Today’s Short Rant From An Old Geezer

For uninteresting reasons I was stalled inside the house today, with none of the usual background noise that normally fills air, typically grandkids and other happy sounds.  Then I made a crucial mistake and turned on the TV.  I mostly gave up television several years ago, citing and absence of anything worth watching.   But now and then I have to check my sales resistance.  I rolled through debris of daytime offerings and stopped at an outdoor channel that had pine trees and water, thinking it might have possibilities.

NOPE

I toughed it out for 30 minutes, listening to a couple of very noisy young men festooned with all of the flashy high priced  gear their sponsors would want them to display, in a bass boat that surely cost more than my house, whooping and hollering every time one of them hooked some poor scrap of a fish.

I took that moment to be thankful for blundering into my first trip to the Northwoods in a canoe many years ago, for ongoing understated paddling partners, quiet conversation around a fire with two fingers of Bourbon and a fat cigar,  sounds in the middle of the night that simply cannot be heard in the city, and for all of the folks here on QJ who seem to understand the same notions.

I am happy to not be buying whatever the two knuckleheads on TV were selling.

Thanks for Listening.

Kind Regards,

Grin Grin Grin

One of the lakes my brother and I like to bass fish on gets "invaded" about once a month by a local bass boat club. We start early they don't get going till 8-9 am and not until everyone has their boat in the water.

The lake is rare for an inland lake in my area becasue it holds LMB/SMB, a few Waldos AND is deep/cold enough it has SPLAKE as well.

Best thing is it has only ONE DNR launch site with maybe 20-25 parking spots tops.

These guys all have at least 50k worth of boats, most much more and 150 hp and up motors.

When they start their tournament, they all roar down the lake in unison and you better be sitting down because the wake will knock you off your feet.

Most are cranking stereos as loud so they can hear them over the roar of the motors. Shocked

After 2-3 hrs they leave but it takes a few days for the water to settle and the weeds they chopped up to float to shore and piss off the homeowners.

The funniest part is that the few times we've been leaving right when their bringing bass it to be tallied, they NEVER seem to have as big a bass as we catch and were complaining that the lake was getting FISHED out. Wink Grin Grin

They look at our little old 16 ft aluminum fishing boat with the 9.8 Merc engine that will run for DAYS on a 6 gallon tank and feel 'sorry' for us. We look at all the money they have tied up in boat/motor/trailer/electronics and more rods/reels just for bass than I have all together and just laugh.

Good thing they don't eat the bass they catch, it would be more expensive than the priciest tuna and not nearly as tasty.

"But now and then I have to check my sales resistance."  That made me laugh.

I would love to watch less TV unfortunately my wife loves it. She's the type who has it on most of the day for background noise. It's unusual if it's off. I kid you not.

As for motor boat dudes, I come from a family who likes to fish that way. Going on vacation to a resort cabin with a boat for the week was how I grew up. Now, the neanderthals that you speak of - well, I just tolerate them. It is what it is. I'm thankful for Quetico as I know 100℅ I won't be seeing or hearing them there.

Fat bass fishermen and motor-heads were the some of the main reasons I turned to canoeing.  I could put-in on creeks, streams and rivers back in North Carolina where they could not follow.  Or, I could take one or two portages and be shed of the "Neanderthals."  The goal was to get away from their obnoxious noise, gas fumes, oily waters, and empty-beer bottle strewn shorelines.

The OTHER big reason was that my own obnoxious outboard motor kept breaking down.  Since I'm cheap and don't have a mechanical bone in my body, I sold my own small boat, trailer, and outboard and jumped into a canoe.

That was over 30 years ago.  It opened my eyes... and even this Neanderthal could see that light.  Coincidentally, as Solotripper has so aptly noted, I discovered the fishing was, indeed, better!  I've been in a canoe ever since.

TV is not all bad now that it is a way tap the internet. The kids can show you how through a smart tv, roku box or other systems. My surround sound system is my favorite way to watch you tube. Find some videos you like and you tube will keep suggesting more like it. I use it to explore new places to paddle.

When I was younger, younger always being defined as Pre-Drivers License, I spent many happy days with my Father and several of his more interesting friends, fishing bigger reservoirs.  Center Hill, Dale Hollow, Barkley and the always curious Reelsfoot. For a young kid it was high living to be traveling with the older guys and getting to fish was a bonus.  One of the friends who is still alive at 93 and still fishing, had told so many stories of fishing “up north on the English river” I decided I would go UP North, wherever that was, as soon as I was mobile.  That idea coupled with seeing Glen Lau and Bob Cary fishing Basswood Falls on a Sunday morning fishing show was what caused my first Quetico trip.

I have nothing against motorized fishing.  At some point I suppose I will have to revert back to it, likely in my Post Drivers License years.  Until then I will maximize my enjoyment by paddling, portaging and having friends who bring better Bourbon than I do.

Regards,

Not sure this is still on thread but have to second the suggestion of Roku.  The unit costs around $75.00 to buy and Hulu channel just $8.00 per month; add high speed internet access and get YouTube...in my opinion like hitting the jackpot of videos to watch.  Lots of vids on camping, canoeing, kayaking, hiking.  Some gorgeously put together videos, lots on BWCA and Quetico, and even a couple by our old buddy QueticoPassage (still out there??).  Also tons on survival techniques, newest high tech and innovative camping gear,  wild tents like Tentsile and a lot on the little house craze.  Some other off the wall favorites of mine are Oroville Dam coverage, pole dancing (a whole new sport which 90% of us will never be able to aspire to), dog training and tuvan throat singing.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

So QueticoPassage ("Bo") was running a bait business called BoTie Jigs the last I heard from him a few months back.  It caters to the tarpon-fishing crowd, I think.  Bo checks in about every six months or so just to see what's up here but I doubt he'll ever return to his prolific posting ways on QJ.  He seems too focused on his deep sea & big game fishing bait business.  Plus I'm thinking he enjoys the tropics too much right now to even think about a return to the cooler climes Up North.

Interestingly enough, however, his new business DOES have a tie to Quetico.  QP once sent me a copy of the logo he uses with his business.  It's an artist's impression of a picture he snapped back in 2006 in Quetico.  It's of a fellow QJ'er fishing the outflow at Rebecca Falls.  It was an action shot and he thought it looked kind of cool... even though the dude in the picture wasn't exactly fishing for tarpon or even using a BoTie Jig.

Now we're REALLY off-topic.  Nevertheless, those of you who have been around QJ a long time can't help but recall QueticoPassage (our grand champion poster for many years).  I figured others, like Intrepid Camper, might be curious as to what he's been up to since he paddled off into the sunset.  So there you have it.

You may now all resume regular broadcasting... and get back on the topic of Old Geezers and such.

FYI

Just as a sidenote to Jimbos post, he sent me a few bo-tie jigs to try in Alaska. The salmon love them. I'm out of them, bite-offs, rocks, etc. I never was able to get the pics he wanted, but they do work up there. Could be a whole nother market.

BTW, I'm heading back to Alaska at the end of July. Let me know how to get some, Bo. Thanks  Cool
