Tipping Outfitters?

The subject about tipping outfitters was addressed on the boards about ten years ago and briefly five years ago (although most of my search brought up issues about tipping canoes  Embarrassed). I confess it had rarely dawned on me to tip outfitters in the past, although there have been exceptional trips where an extra show of appreciation would have been appropriate. I'm curious about what the standard is among the frequent travelers in Quetico.
  -  Do you tip your outfitter?
  -  If so, what amount?

For our upcoming trip, I elected to work with more of an independent/small shop rather than the big (by Quetico standards) business we have always used in the past. I can say that the degree of personal attention I have received to date warrants extra compensation!

Appreciate your thoughts...

Difficult question. I usually tip a tow boat or shuttle driver - $5-10/person, although have not towed for 5+ years. Otherwise, I'm dealing with an owner and it seems awkward to tip an owner, especially since some (many? just mine?) have added an "outfitting" charge, like  5% of the total. I don't mind that at all, but not sure I should add.

We always tip the help, van drivers, boat drivers, anyone who went out of their way to be helpful.  One outfitter we frequented had one employee who knew and fished the Quetico well.  Always gave us good current info on where we were going.  It was helpful enough we would show up, tell him where we were headed and hand him $50. Split between four guys $12.50 out of each pocket was a bargain for what information we received.

I tip the tow boat operator $10 or so. Other than a tow I don't use an outfitter.

I always tip and try to tip generously and I try to spend locally for things that I can (like hitting Zup's for last minute stuff and perishables).  I love the place and I want to 'invest' in the future of the area so my favorite places will be there for years to come.  The Ely area is not high income, high tax base, so the more you spend locally, I feel, the more it strengthens the local economy for all.  I usually end up staying a few days extra on the front end of the trip and will typically tip the outfitter/staff 10-15%, depending on how much of their services I use.  And like Mossback says, a few bucks for some good local intel can really make the trip.

I will tip the tow boat driver besides the server if I get a meal.  I usually have good conversations with the boat driver to Prairie Portage.  Last September on my solo I gave an older driver a $20.  Made both him and me feel good.

DentoDoc & I TRIED to tip our truck-in driver - heavily - last year.  He hauled a couple loads for us across the Beaverhouse put-in portage, unasked, at a time  when I was still recovering from fusion surgery in my back.    Needless to say, I/we  you were most appreciative!    The guy wouldn't take a penny of it!  He said, "Hey, it's my job. "

That particular outfitter really didn't need to earn any more "customer loyalty" with me.  I was already hooked.  Nevertheless, it amounted to yet another small reason why he will see me again & again, year after year.

Jimbo.  Cool

Depends on the service. I've had one tow from Black Robe that almost refused to swing by the Lac La Croix pictos for my friends who had't gotten a good look at them. It was too windy on the way into Bottle to hold the boat, it was, but different driver then. The snooty driver also threw my graphite paddles around like they were plastic beaters. He was real careful of my ugly sticks  Huh, thought he had that backwards  Angry. Then he stuck his hand out like the tip was expected. One person in our group did tip him, but I wouldn't have.

I think I got off on the wrong foot with this Crane Lake outfitter, I didn't know why at the time. In our introduction conversation I mentioned mostly getting towed in from the Indian Village by a certain 1st nation character (yes Jimbo, same guy). I knew my contact at the village was a lot cheaper, and thought to myself the boat looked familiar too. If you remember there was a time when Cdn outfitters could get you cheaper permit rates if you used them. I'm guessing using my contact in the village qualified the US outfitter as Cdn even though he was based in Crane Lake. I could tell this guy's jaw tightened a bit when I told him how I got towed in, but I thought it was just that I used someone else. Took me awhile to figure out the whole story.

I have had great service, and do tip then, especially if it means getting on fish.

Jimbo I thought you'd like this story. He's a slick one  Grin Cool,, no names  Wink

I'll tip the tow driver about $10 per person but if I'm solo it's a $20 regardless.

Presumes he is careful with my stuff, of course. If he throws things around with no regard, then no tip and I will talk to the owner about it when I return (I will also immediately reprimand the driver to attempt to get him to be more careful as he finishes loading/unloading).
