I'm planning a trip into the Howard Lakes in 6 weeks... has anyone been there? It seems like it is a place of great mystery.... maybe it isn't but the topography looks cool... I'm hoping for some thoughts on the NORTH lake especially. Are there any known camping spots? Anybody put a lure in the water? Thanks in advance!

MapsGuy1955,

I think you're right about it being somewhat of a mystery.  While I have certainly "passed by" the entrance to these lakes a number of times, I've not investigated.

I can tell you it starts getting pretty shallow as you approach where you head north.  It looks "swamp-like" where it starts to narrow down.  Also, I know people who have had some luck with walleyes & Northerns as you head up the creek. Lord knows what happens on the other side of the entrance creek.  It could open up nicely, get deep and even have a rim of rock and cliffs... but I seriously doubt it.  My guess is that it will be "more of the same."  It seems I DID know someone who got up in there once, I just can't remember who.  You might try a "Search" through the QJ archives.

I almost poked my head in there one time.  I sort of wish I had, just to put the mystery to bed.  Ordinarily, I would ask you to be sure to report back on what you find.  However, I kind of doubt you'll get much feedback on your question.  So, if you do head up in there, you earn the right to do whatever you wish with that information.

Good luck!

So I just followed my own advice & used the "Search" function on Howard Lakes.  I recommend doing likewise before proceeding... especially true if planning to head through there during black fly season.

FYI
