What seems sad to me is that it's ONLY been 6 months since the LAST Copia!  Seems more like six years!

This "time in the middle" gets to be brutal.  Lots of snow & ice between now and paddling season again... beginning this Saturday in the Twin Cities.  Flakes are in the forecast, even though it'll reach the 70's today.

I guess we're approaching daydreaming season.

Typically I have only attended Copia for one night, but  throughout this year I lobbied and won a full 2 day kitchen pass so I can enjoy more of the QJ event and people.  I also want to congratulate Magic in person as another member on my short list of hero's.  Please don't ask me what I had to give up in barter and trade to get the second day.

Yes. The long dark freezing months. Ugh.

My youngest daughter is getting married on Saturday about two hours north of Madison.  It's going to be 65 on Thursday, 60 on Friday, then 39 on Saturday, with a "frozen mix".  Tongue Poor girl was planning an outdoor wedding. So inside we go! Looks like my bar tab is going to go up  Huh

So let's all hunker down and share stories of slogging through sweltering portages to remind us that it is possible to actually be warm  Cool

Sorry guys.  I'm a bit tied up at the moment.

A local production of the comedy play "Lend Me a Tenor" goes up for a week-long run.  While I'm not in the play, I am doing some front-end music ... a 5 minute aria from Barber of Seville; and yes, it is all in Italian.

Tomorrow is the second round of auditions for a local variety show.  I'm both in the first act (this time singing the Bach version of Ave Maria in Latin) and directing the second act.  This show goes up toward the end of November.

Before that happens, my wife and I will be returning to Chicago to see our daughter-in-law, who is the only actor/actress performing in "Every Brilliant Thing" at the Windy City Theater (which runs Sept 18 - Dec 8).  All the reviews (both major news papers, a tv station and others) have given it a "Highly Recommended" rating.  Some have also said it is a "must see" and "best show in town."  So if you are headed to Chicago and looking for a "different" kind of play (there is audience participation), you might check it out.

Then after all of that I rest up a bit and start prepping for my audition for "Guys and Dolls" in February, with performance dates in May (rehearsals are generally about 2 months).  I received some of the audition materials today.

After that, I'm looking for a canoe trip!!!

I thought retirement meant you had some free time.  I'm clearly doing something wrong!!!

After two weeks out west and a week up at the land I flew out to San Diego today to dog sit for a week.   73 and sunny today, tomorrow, the next day, the next day.....you get it.  I never envisioned being so busy in retirement.

I was online the last couple of days researching next years adventures.  Never to early to plan!

When do the QJ group singing lessons start Wayne?

Mad_Mat,

I just finished your excellent trip solo trip report.
You ARE the man, I've never read at least on the QJ about a more harrowing/tough trip.

I'm glad you made it safe and sound. After a trip like that, a Q trip must feel like a vacation.

I know on one of your other river trips you brought a shotgun for bear protection? I didn't see it mentioned so I'm assuming you didn't this time? How about some Bear Spray?

I kept waiting to read about a bear encounter but I guess you didn't need that at least close up.  Wink Grin Grin

ST,

I didn't have time to check on the regs for flying commercial with a shotgun, so didn't bring one.  I did have a can of bear spray.  Only saw one bear track, maybe they were all up higher to get away from the mosquitos.

Those mosquitos were something wicked as the Canadian's say.

There's a story I read on the Alaskan Hunting/Fishing forums.

It was about a solo guy who wanted to be dropped by floatplane so he could basecamp on an Alaskan River to fly fish for a week. He had all the right gear, the problem was for the pilot it was ALL new gear?

Bush pilot wasn't crazy about dropping a solo guy there and even more so when said he didn't bring a firearm and refused to take a shotgun the pilot offered him. Said he had BEAR SPRAY, that's all he would need.

There are bears all over that river and when the pilot dropped him off told him that he flies daily to another established fishing camp and would check on him. IF he wanted to get out for any reason, just wave him down.

The pilot takes off into the wind, swings around to take a look at his client. He sees the guy flopping around on the riverbank in obvious distress. He doesn't see a bear/moose but he lands to see what the hell was going on?

Turns out this Darwin Award winner was being eaten alive by the mosquitos and black flies so he sprayed himself down with the BEAR SPRAY, mistaking if for bug spray.  Huh Wink Grin Grin Grin

The pilot gets him cleaned-up and the guy says he's okay, he'll see him in a week!  The pilot tells him he's taking him back, NO amount of money is worth knowing he left someone like that alone in bear country. Loaded the protesting clients unpacked gear and took him out.

I laugh every time I think about that. Grin Grin

M_M.  That's funny.  I can picture the guy thrashing around on the ground!

My wife and I can relate to this as we were accidentally sprayed by a person demonstrating to us HOW to use the spray!  It knocked my wife to her knees as she got the direct hit in the chest (actually a ricochet off of a counter) and we both had trouble breathing for a while.  It also cleared out the other folks and staff that were in the small lodge.  It's some wicked stuff.  I knew the nice lady didn't know what she was doing when she popped the safety cap off and had it pointing at us (think gun here) but by then it was too late Angry   We did see a huge radio collared grizzly on that trip at about 60 yds.  The size of that bear was unbelievable. Luckily it just walked off.   This took place in the Absoraka Mtns. outside of Yellowstone some years ago while trout fishing.  I've oft wondered if I'd even have the presence of mind to stay calm enough to use it effectively in a close encounter with a grizzly.  I do know that I wouldn't smell very good at that point.  I wonder how sh_t and bear spray pair together for flavor ?   I'm thinking the poor bear would have a hard time getting THAT taste out of its mouth for a while  Lips Sealed

I had a black bear within a couple of feet of me while turkey hunting in WI but they're relatively harmless.  I was in a blind with shotgun in lap when it looked in the side window.  The very first thought that went through my mind was that my shotgun was pointed in the wrong direction. My second thought was that the bear had a "worried" look on his (thinking it was a large boar) face.  I bet that the bear thought the same thing of me. I didn't move a muscle and we stared at each other for perhaps 3-4 seconds before it walked off.  I do admit however that it was a bit unnerving to have a  bear in that tight  Undecided

Anyway, glad you had a safe trip!  Did you mention if you had any luck with sheep?

I have a buddy who bow hunts. He was on his property in Northern MI in a tree stand about 30' high.

Hasn't seen any deer and he's getting hungry. Takes out some homemade venison jerky to eat.
Hears a clawing sound and looks down to see a big old black bear coming up the tree!  Shocked

He freaked out and thought he might have to shoot the bear in self-defense. He had a LEGAL pistol with him too.

Then he realizes the bear just wanted the jerky. He drops the jerky bag right on the bear's head. Yogi grabbed the bag went down the tree and disappeared in the woods.

My buddy was so freaked out he waited in treestand till his hunting partner came looking for him.  Wink

Never told his wife or else he would never hear the end of it.  Wink Grin Grin

I'm sure he needed to get some clean drawers when he got back to the cabin.  Embarrassed Grin Grin

Spartan2 -

If they miss this show, they will have a chance to see her in another play in the spring.  She finishes "Brilliant" in early December and then starts rehearsals for another show with the Remy Bumppo Theater after the first of the year.  (I'm not yet sure of the title of the next play.)

I wouldn't say that she is busy, but during rehearsals for "Brilliant" she also was shooting a couple of episodes of an Amazon Prime series called "Utopia" and a movie remake of "Candyman."  During one weekend (Saturday & Sunday), she did a matinee, an evening show, re-shoot for "Candyman" until 3:00 AM and another evening show.

Show Biz is feast or famine ... right now it clearly feast.

Mike -

I've heard a couple of QJ board members bellow on occasion.  Some are quite talented and others are, lets say, beyond my skill level. Wink Shocked Roll Eyes

M_M Thanks for your report. It brought back memories. Our trip was in 2009 and I remember our intel about rapids being very different than what we found too. Places others had trouble we didn't and vis versa, we had trouble where other didn't. We got to use hard shell Old Town Discos with decking and ran all but 2 rapids. We started on the Rawlpindi River. But yeah it all sounds familiar. We did get a Griz visit us and leave it's nose snot on one of our tents. It ran off when we all jumped out and yelled. I think I might have posted a report here and sent pic in too.

Great job doing it solo Matt. We had a group of 6.

I'm likely to go back to the Yukon River next year - I'll bring both a can of bear spray and a shotgun for that trip - I saw bear tracks a lot of the places I stopped on my first trip.

I'd rather have a shotgun and NOT need it than NOT have one and REALLY wish you had it!

I don't know if they had more than ONE can of Bear Spray but they only hold a few bursts in them. That bear was detoured for a bit but not like you would think he would be.

As the spray runs out if they keep coming they learn that it's not fatal, only uncomfortable. No different than a drugged-up thug attacking you and being sprayed with civilian pepper spray.

You've seen police videos, they'll walk right thru it.
I'd spray a bear ONE time good and if it came back it would be 12 gauge slug time for Yogi.

I have shot a lot of deer and I would think a bear is as tough as a deer as far as being able to keep going after being shot.  I’m a good shot and have put a 12 Gauge slug through the heart of several deer.  It is common for a deer to run 100 yards after having a slug put through their heart.  My point is I do not think a bear will just die instantly after being shot. If you do hit him in the heart he is going to be mad and excited for several minutes.  Spine shots generally stop an animal and drop them in their tracks. Place your shots carefully gentleman.

I've seen the same thing. Those deer are running on adrenaline/nerves, like a chicken with its head cut off.

Big Game guides that take clients after dangerous game often carry a rifle that is way more powerful than the one the client is able to shoot accurately.

The reason is they need that KNOCKDOWN power, which literally knocks the animal to the ground. Killing something isn't the same as stopping it at close range. The Inuit people are known to hunt/kill Polar bears with calibers considered suitable for varmints. Stalk close and shoot them in the head.

Since the game laws say you can't kill a bear unless it's right upon you, more than likely your going to go for a headshot. The right ammo to pierce that thick skull will drop them like a rock.

Of course under stress that isn't an easy thing to do.

If it were me, I'd have both Bear Spray and a shotgun. IF possible I would hit them with the Bear Spray and follow that up with a NON-LETHAL load from the shotgun.

They make hard rubber 00 Buckshot/Slugs that hurt like hell but do no long term damage. You want that bear to FEAR humans and leave the area.

That couple in M_M story kept the bear off them but it destroyed their canoe and left them stranded. That extra hurt from non-lethal rounds would have probably driven it far off. Bears are smart. Once they relate humans to pain, they'll steer clear. Good for the humans, better for the bear as nuisance bears get killed by the game wardens.

I've missed Q for a couple years now. We've been doing some arctic trips though. But one of the best trips I done was last summer hiking the John Muir Trail. It's just beautiful and enough of a challenge to feel like a feat. Kind of a shorter version of a bigger thru hike, but 3 weeks instead of 3 months.
I thinking it's time to return to Q next year.

I enjoyed reading this account.  It's something I would love to do but not solo.  I'm not versed in river travel so would have to go with experienced people.  I'm also not so sure I would handle all that grayness and constant wind.  Then there's the insects.  But, the adventure factor would be very high and that really appeals to me.  Kudos to you for doing it solo.

I am curious what bear protection you brought?  Did you ever use the sat phone?  Thanks for the write up and pics.

As for me and the doldrums - I'm thinking of getting a new stove and maybe a pot along with an Inreach at Copia.  I'm reading Farley Mowat again!  His WWII memoir "And No Birds Sang" is really well done.  Highly recommend!  I've read a few of his books long ago (1980's) and will soon order a few more.  Just a fabulous writer and lover of all things nature.

I'm also thinking of a route for next years "Pierna or bust!" trip.  I'm thinking North Bay through Shade Lake and take the Yum Yum portage into Kahshahpiwi.  Layover on Sark to have time to scout a route for the bushwhack to Pierna.  On the way out I'd love to camp on Irene Lake and maybe explore the no names to the north.  Then take the bog portage out of Kahsh back home.  I think 12 nights should be fine. So, I've got THAT to daydream about.  Smiley

Speaking of doldrums.  I'm out in San Diego for a while dog sitting for the kids so I have some time on my hands.  On the plus side I'm getting in some nice hiking up and down the hills AND we managed to catch a lobster, my first ever!  Ahem....forgot to mention the weather.

I took Opasquia off of this years list as I have one or two folks going along who have never done this type of tripping and I thought it might be a bit much.  Still trying to decide between another trip into WCPP or head into Atikaki.  The WCPP trip would be Burntwood/Dutch R/Thicketwood/Sabourin R/Little Bigshell/Bigshell.  This year we went from Bigshell to Young.

I have no clue yet as to where I'd go in Atikaki but have contacted Blue Water Aviation in Bisset, MB and got some info from them.  Also in contact with Manitoba Parks for info.  I'll try to hook up with Martin sometime this winter and talk about Atikaki as well.  Hopefully will see ya'll at Copia and we'll be talking there as well.

Anyway, something to do till I get back home and head up to the land to do some hunting.  Somehow, I agreed to babysit for two days next week but I might have to subcontract that out.  Some folks like winter/fall/summer/spring.  I like the rut.

Later.......

I sure am envious of you retired folks.  I'm looking at YOU Mike, Jim, Lynda, Rich, Rich, Neal, and soon another Mike.  Oh well, I can daydream with the best of 'em.

Here's something to look at.  Shug did a hike on the Superior Hiking Trail and when finished stopped in at the Angry Trout restaurant in Grand Marais.  Here's a look at what he had. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You left out some of the colorful characters who comprise QJ.  Shocked Huh

The Angry Trout serves up some awesome whitefish, lake trout, herring, and smelt depending on the season.
When local fish are not available, they serve fresh Alaskan sockeye salmon. You can’t make a bad choice.

Don’t overlook the Dockside Market next door. They have smoked salmon and all of the Lake Superior fish. For a “to go” lunch, you cannot beat their fish wraps.

Retirement is just a matter of finding another way to live... Cool

The Angry Trout has excellent fare!  Worth a stop for sure.  Stop at the Dockside Fish Market and pick up some Walleye Dust for your spice kit - a great compliment to those Quetico marble eyes, fried, baked or grilled!

Tom,  if you went on an outfitter trip, it wouldn't matter.  They would likely pair you with a more experienced paddler, and most will give some ww training before you hit the gnarly stuff.
All you need is the time and money - arctic trips run about $10,000 Canadian, plus the cost to get up there.  Doing it myself was about half that.

somebody else asked if I did get a sheep - I did get a half curl ram, just barely legal - it was the first legal ran I saw in 11 days scouting and 8 days hunting - since he was only a little bighorn, I named him "Custer"

They make hard rubber 00 Buckshot/Slugs that hurt like hell but do no long term damage. You want that bear to FEAR humans and leave the area.  ...   That extra hurt from non-lethal rounds would have probably driven it far off. Bears are smart. Once they relate humans to pain, they'll steer clear. Good for the humans, better for the bear as nuisance bears get killed by the game wardens.

I have long wondered why a product hasn't been developed that when consumed would make a bear temporarily but quickly very uncomfortably sick.  It seems places like Yellowstone are constantly dealing with bears coming into parks foraging for food.  Such a product would teach them park food is not a desirable item.

I managed to gag a possum with some of my ex-wife's baloney gravy one time, but it kept coming back for more.

Surely a bear is smarter and tougher than a possum.

OK, so my self-esteem is suffering here.   No traction or rebuttal on the previous possum story, must be a tough audience.

I did at least get the canoe out in the beautiful Fall weather yesterday and rub some oil on the woodwork.

Possums are a favorite of mine.  When I was a teenager I was a typical "kill every wild animal you can" kind of douchebag.  Me and my friends had pellet guns and would inflict unnecessary terrorism on the bird, rabbit and squirrel population.  Well one night on a sleepover in a tent we walked the neighborhoods after curfue dodging cop cars only to find a possum crossing the street.  So we grabbed sticks and beat it to death.

That was a turning point for me.  It wasn't long after that I sold my pellet gun and gravitated myself away from those "friends".  My love for all creatures now is to the point where I'm letting spiders roam free in the house or putting them outside.  Yes, people CAN change their ways.

When I was about 8-9 I used my paper route money to buy a WHAMMO SLINGSHOT. Dad was a heavy equipment mechanic and that meant I had an unlimited supply of steel ball bearings for ammo.

We had all kinds of pets, some wild ones too. My parents let me have that slingshot with the agreement I wouldn't shoot anything but cans/targets in the backyard. Dad made me a shooting gallery rack.

Well, I got pretty good and one day I lookup in one of the tall Oaks in our backyard and see a big old
Blue Jay sitting there.

I don't know why but I pulled back and took a shot.
I didn't really think I would hit it but I did and it fell dead at my feet!

I was so distraught and started bawling. That got my little sister's attention and she came out and started crying too. I knew she'd tell my parents, so I put the Blue Jay in a shoebox and when Dad came home I fessed up to my evil deed.

He could see how upset I was so he didn't yell at me or spank me like I thought he would.

He told me that I had learned a valuable lesson the hard way. You NEVER point a weapon of any kind at a living animal or person unless your WILLING to kill them.

He made me get a shovel and we buried the Blue Jay in the pet cemetery we had in the corner of the backyard.

I still like to hunt/fish, but I don't hunt for trophies, I only hunt to eat what I kill/catch.

I'm like you with wild critters, I put them outside or trap in non-kill critter trap and re-locate to a wooded area. Only exceptions have been a few raccoons that were obviously sick/aggressive and I had to put down for safety reasons.

I read stories about people abusing/killing animals just for fun it makes my blood boil. They better never do that around me. I don't have that many years left and I can think of far worse things to be locked up for.

No possums or any other living creature was harmed in the telling of this "Tongue In Cheek" tale.    Well, OK, maybe the ex's cooking ability might have taken a small hit.

I have possums on my front porch every night cleaning up what the lazy overfed cats leave behind.  I watched one get bigger and bigger, until one night I saw the new brood all hanging on her back.

Grit  magazine just ran a story about how possums may be a benefit to the spreading Lyme disease problem.  Apparently much of their regular diet consists of ticks.

Regards,

Anything that eats ticks is okay by me. I can handle the flying/biting insects but one that burrows into your skin just make's me cringe.

MB. I caught the bologna gravy post and thought it was funny Smiley
I always joke that my wife cooks just like my mom did but my mom didn't poop in it.

Like some others I needlessly killed some critters when I was a kid.  I think that may have lead to my deep respect for all living things that I now enjoy.

SP2.  I caught that neat water effect on the pic as well.
