Gray Jays are still around, though not in the numbers I once saw. I've had a pair frequenting the homestead this winter.

A pair that noticed me fueling during a ski. They took turns taking chunks of sourdough cornmeal waffle with peanut butter and jam from my hands, flying off to stash it in a tree and coming back for more. Cheeky.

pk....when trying that, just make sure not to bite Solus' hand to get a chunk of waffle!!!  Cheesy

Solus - pro tip - use bigger chunks of waffle for pine knot. And he likes grape raspberry jam.

That's a beautiful shot, PK.  Makes me want to grab my paddle and get in the canoe.   Smiley

This POD was taken on June 26, 2009 from an island in Quetico looking south across the border into Friday Bay of Crooked Lake.  Amazing to see big water like this so calm....in fact, it was the calm before the storms, as it began to rain the next morning and continued almost non-stop for the next 4 1/2 days as we made our way to Argo and then Brent.  The sun finally came out when we reached eastern Brent, and by the time we made it to North Bay of Basswood the fishing went bonkers for two straight days....   Cool Cheesy

I love those nice flat rock shelves to cast from shore.

As for calm big water - In 2001 I went solo from Crooked to Prairie Portage on Basswood over 2 days.  Both days were as calm as could be.  I never felt so fortunate because I was dreading that part of my trip because starting my trip going in to Burke portage almost capsized me and a tandem that was near me in Bayley Bay making the crossing.  Shocked Shocked So I was very uncomfortable entering Basswood on the way home.

The most panic stricken two hours of my life occurred on Bayley Bay one late day in May.
I think the other three friends I was traveling with would agree.

pk....that is one fine fetch of water - and a great pic....I agree with Spartan2....it has me jonesin' to grab my paddle.

I think we've all been on the scary end of big water.  First trip in '99 was out of PP and crossing Bailey Bay in 3 footers...hairy to say the least.  Like TomT, I have also had the pleasant opportunity to cross it when it was smooth as glass - something you don't take for granted up there.
