I recognized that spot right away.
Never really fished it except for a few casts as I was heading towards the portage into Russell lk.

I did have the biggest NP I've ever seen on just long enough to get a good look and down it went and snapped my line.  Grin Grin

It's always worth the effort to fish moving waters. I mark my map as I travel to show them. Some are only seasonal from snowmelt but they always seem to hold fish at the spill-out.

Yeah, it was kinda of a funny spot.  I caught a few along the near shore.  There was a 25"+ walleye in there and a few nice northerns.  There was a small herd of walleyes out in the current but closer to the other shore.  The current was really ripping along and made for some fast drifts and tough paddles back upstream which made it tough fishing....but good exercise!  If memory serves MP and I took a nice break along the shoreline in a really nice little spot.   Pretty place, great company and very enjoyable!

Jimbo, might want to let just a little more line out so the lure runs below the surface.  There's more fish down there. Grin

More likely that is Wally13 proudly displaying his trophy haul that day.

Jimbo, I'm curious how you guys worked out the paddling.  Were you just the engine and paddling one side the whole time?  Or maybe you guys had a hut system with switches? I've never been a bow paddler. The lack of having control would unnerve me I'm afraid.  Grin

TomT,

EXCELLENT question!

For me, it was a major experiment outside of my comfort zone!   I pretty much stayed in the bow for the entire trip. My reasoning? I was looking to take advantage of Wally13’s expertise re: fishing for walleyes and let him steer us into position.  Also, we were having difficulty mounting his transducer in the bow of the canoe.

I will admit to experiencing the jitters & some very anxious moments when we hit some big waves en route to North Bay that very first morning.  Wally13  exercised a great deal of patience with me and I learned to trust him in the stern... but it took a while, especially when we started taking in water over the side!

My comfort zone has ALWAYS been paddling from the stern.   Only once before did I ever paddle from the bow & that was also with a QJer (Tripper, way back-in 2003).  Ultimately, I gained faith in the experience of Wally13.  Also, it didn’t hurt that I was extremely confident in the seaworthiness of my Souris River 17 footer.

Finally, I eventually became a better bow paddler for basic self-preservation reasons. It is far easier for the stern paddler to swing his paddle at the guy in the front than it is for me, in the bow, to swing my weapon backward  at the guy in the stern who is screwing things up.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

That's why I use a kayak paddle.  It has a much better reach to whack someone from either the bow or stern.

I had a girlfriend once that got into Q trips to the point she actually read a Bill mason book. We were paddling down the Pickerel river and were coming up to the sharpest bend. She said she wanted to try something she learned. I said ok. She turned that canoe on a dime!

To me, the bow is a very scary place. There's nothing to relate to and the troughs and crests look sooo much bigger up there.

Did Jimbo tell you to "say cheese!"?  Grin

I'm curious about that pole in front, not Lawrence, he's Irish, but that skinny pole attached to lift the tarp.  I've used an adjustable painters pole in the past but what is this?
