It's the island on the eastern end of Sturgeon Narrows near the outflow from Russell. This was the day I couldn't get past the first island going up to Russell and headed for the crazy stairway portage so it doesn't look like it normally would.

I've had that problem as well. Camped on the high perched peninsula site overlooking Sturgeon. The outflow from Russel was strong from spring melt and my solo canoe had no chance against that current. Sturgeon narrows is a scenic place though.

Is this ice?  It's strange because of all the greenery.

TomT,

This is clearly the calcified lower torso of an ancient hominid who got stuck in the mud.  Look closely and you can distinctly make out its hind quarters.

I guess that's what he/she gets for not digging his/her hole a couple hundred yards back in the woods.

My guess is that it is moving water photographed at a slow shutter speed.  But just my guess.   Wink

Ah, you were talking about the water in the background!  I thought you were referring to what appears to be a rock in the foreground!  Couldn't understand how you would think moss would grow on ice....

Heck, maybe it does.

Anyway, I still say the rock shape is a calcified torso... and that's WATER behind it.

Lynda -

Yeah.  Probably is a time delay.  My first thought was ... wow, it was very foggy just off shore.

It's probably a 90 second exposure on a time delay so I could walk away from the tripod and do my mosquito dance.

It's not ice but rather a slice of time - which, in a way, is kinda what ice is so you're all right!

Today's shot and the next couple are from the path along Chatterton Falls in spring 2001 when the water was unusually high in my experience.

Love the March 3 photo db!  Always amazed what nature can produce when people aren't around to muck things up.
