Yes, a CCS spray skirt.  I have always been very pleased with all of their gear.  I did make a small modification to fit my lack of skill and nerve.

I was traveling with two other tandems and this was my first time out on a real trip with this canoe.  So they headed to Argo for the day and I stayed behind to sort out how to fish from a solo without taking an unplanned bath.

It took me some time getting used to using my CCS spray skirt.  It works well enough but can be a bit of a PIA on a multi-portage trip, popping it off the rivets, snapping it back on again, etc.  Mostly, now - during the warm months - I stow it away until truly rainy days and, then, mostly just days where we have camp set-up and I will be out fishing in the rain. In May or after mid-September, however, another set of rules apply and the spray skirt will stay "on" more than "off", no matter how much the inconvenience.  I DO value the protection it offers from being COLD and WET!

Also, it took me a trip or two before I discovered the necessity of wetting it down some before putting it on my Prism.  It helps it stretch enough to reach rivets and will dry quickly enough.

Yes, there is a learning curve that comes with the skirts.  I also have one for my old Independence and I noticed the longer it had been since it had been on the canoe, the longer it had to soak to get it back on the next time.

You mentioned enjoying the skirt in colder weather, so are you using the Velcro release torso section as well?  Or just using bow and stern ends?

I also bought a snap removal tool that seems to put less stress on the hull and rivets.   A Q-tip applied film of zipper lube inside the snaps makes them a lot quicker to pop off.  I also shortened the handle on the tool to save a couple of ounces.

Yes, I am fully expecting “zipper lube” comments.

MB,

Yeah, I use the velcro release.

I hadn't thought about using zipper lube.  Good idea, though popping the skirt on & off has been less of a problem since I've gotten better with "pre-stretching" the material by wetting it.

You know those wind tunnel tests for cars with the smoke and the math involved? I'd truly love to see something like that for canoes with and without a spray skirt.

Hey Jimbo,

Thanks for the history on QP! I didn't want to quote your lengthy post here because it would be easier just to post my reply, but I wanted to say 'thanks" for that background info. I find the history of who has been on QJ before I arrived as interesting as those who are on here now (carrying the torch so to speak). QP is/was a legend. on the same level as MP's paddling stamina!   That should be easy if the guys that use them have GPS capability?

Jimbo could get MP to do a set distance run in the same conditions in his or another solo canoe with/without the spray skirt.
Just make sure he gets some rest/water between runs.  Wink Grin Grin

Looks a bit like the spillway on one side of island at Rebecca Falls to me.  Probably not, though....
