Have never had coffee while in the canoe.  I usually start my day with hot chocolate, and then have a cup or two of coffee with breakfast.  Only water on the water.   Grin

But when I see a scene like this one, I just want to put my paddle across my lap, let the canoe slow down, take a photo or two, and listen, listen, listen.   I may be somewhat of a silence junkie.

This and the previous day's picture were taken from the same spot at virtually the same time one day apart. What a difference a day makes.....

A long long time ago I did a trip with some guy I meet on these here internets. Turned out, he smuggled in a thermos that I don't even remember seeing and certainly do not remember discussing before the trip.

I've brought a thermos on every trip I've done since. That little dribble dribble sound of coffee hitting the cup at sun rise or decaf at set, just adds to the moment for me.

I don't bring a Thermos per se. I have an insulated open mouth food jar that I use as my coffee thermos.
It holds about 20 oz of coffee. On travel days I break camp while the coffee/oatmeal water is heating. I eat my oatmeal and then pour the hot water in my travel thermos using my nylon sock/coffee brewing method.

Wait a bit and then I sip as I paddle along. On camp days I brew a full pot of coffee.

When the day comes I'm just a base camper I'll bring my full-size stainless thermos.
On a cool morning or rainy travel day in cool weather, a nice hot cup of coffee OR hot chocolate and a handful of trail mix to keep your energy levels up makes a big difference IMHO.

Just remember that coffee is a DIURETIC and remember to re-hydrate with water on a regular basis.

In my case, I'm pretty sure I'd have dried up and blown away some 40 years ago when my parents sold my childhood home (with that wonderful wonderful garden hose.) Smiley

I respect the coffee 'moments' but Yukon Jack isn't terrible before 6am either.

Solus,

Your POD is great. That's what I call a canoe with some "character".  Smiley

I got the MNII from Piragis after a group swamped on a lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters. They were picked up by a motorboat, but the canoe was left in the rough water, semi-submerged overnight. It was nearly in two pieces- about a 4" strip of material just in front of the bow seat holding the two pieces together. Piragis sold it to me for $200. While the repairs were successful in keeping the integrity and shape of the hull it was so ugly I did it one better by painting it with tinted epoxy. Really ugly but functional and easily identifiable from a distance.

While caffeine is a mild diuretic, coffee or tea don't cause dehydration.. This is because the amount of water contained in the beverage is greater than the diuretic effect. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

Solus - Sat./Sun. POD's, very nice.....Kahshapiwi from the mid lake, high ledge site, east side, across from the Joyce portage?  The view is even grander when you climb all the way to the top of the hill and look down the lake.
