While caffeine is a mild diuretic, coffee or tea don't cause dehydration.. This is because the amount of water contained in the beverage is greater than the diuretic effect. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

I'm not sure I believe that is true for everyone?
This link shows some disagreement on that issue.

I'll speak to JUST how my body reacts when I drink too much coffee/tea. I pee often and alot. I seriously doubt in MY case the volume of liquid expelled is being adequately replaced by the coffee/tea.

I know when I just drink coffee/tea and do anything strenuous I have the same negative effects attributed to being de-hydrated?

Might just be me.

.

Conclusion summary from the link you attached:
"But what of their effects on hydration? When it comes to caffeine, the oft-repeated advice to cut out caffeinated drinks to boost hydration seems well wide of the mark. Not only is there scant evidence that drinks containing even moderate levels of caffeine exert a diuretic effect, but cutting out these drinks and not replacing them with at least an equivalent volume of non-caffeinated beverages would actually lead to poorer hydration.
Normal-strength tea and coffee therefore appear to be perfectly acceptable either before or after exercise, although you should remember that sodium/electrolyte drinks may be a better strategy after strenuous exercise in the heat. The only caveat is that if you habitually abstain from caffeine, suddenly introducing it in the form of strong drinks may exert a mild diuretic effect."

I qualified that statement by saying for ME that is NOT how it works.

How about a real-world experiment Solus. I won't be doing ANY paddling trips this year but I'm sure you will.

How about you do a trip and ONLY drink caffeinated coffee/tea, NO water period except if it's a part of a meal.

Do your normal routine and report what you find?

I would go crazy from inability to fall asleep and uncontrolled fits of rage at gear I will perceive to have failed me.

I have finite tolerance for caffeine. Five cups of exceptionally strong coffee/day. More and I spend long hours into tent turning bunny rabbits and toads into bears.

Interesting POD today. Where is that mossy patch and interesting rock face located?

Thanks. Had to use paddleplanner to find it --- mostly because I haven't been into Ted yet!

I'm enjoying your PODS Solus.
They remind me of old school post cards.  Cool
