That day we did 4-5 shortish portages out of Robinson in Quetico to get to Kett Lake then we did a fairly long one and took our lunch break pictured here. After padding across a small unnamed we tackled about a 280 rod portage that is very scenic.  But it wears on you and we had a lot of gear.  The thing I remember most about that last one before hitting Basswood Lake is hearing Jimbo long before I saw him.  We would be going opposite ways on that portage through the trees and Jimbo was singing!

Now, I distract myself from the shoulder pain by watching Luna out in front of me.  Apparently Jimbo uses singing.  :) I don't remember the song though.... I think it was Billie Jean in the Michael Jackson voice.

That's a German accent on French there, OS.  Grin Grin Grin

I think it's "je te plumerai la queue" not tete...but what do I know?

BTW, I am a survivor of that portage as well (but not on the trip of these hearty voyageurs). Kett out of Basswood certainly took its toll on me with the various blowdowns, dry swamps and sheer length. The shorter one (160r?) into Kett was much easier by comparison but still adequately long to have me looking for a campsite on Kett instead of continuing on.

The portages out of Tuck into Robinson are short, flat and easy. I greatly enjoyed the change of pace.

We were all ready to camp when arriving at the Kings Point site on Basswood. It was a tough day for sure but no complaints.  I gotta give it up for guys like Wally13 and Jimbo that day.  They pushed their bodies very hard. Sometimes I wonder why we keep doing these exhausting trips to the interior but the answer is always the same - it's worth it!  Smiley

Handling that higher level of exertion is still not a big deal.  Daily workouts since forever do pay dividends for heart & muscle health.  The REAL issue is "stability/balance."  Aging, osteoarthritis, hip, back & knee surgeries certainly take their toll there.  We have been fortunate to have youngsters like you & Portage Dog (AND each other) along to lean on when we hit tricky spots on those challenging interior park portages.

Without such support, interior trips would be a very risky proposition for us old warhorses these days... and I rather favor the notion of being able to bounce a grandchild on a knee when the opportunity arrives.

My sincere thanks to comrades - of all ages- who make that possible!

Jimbo Cool

Hats off to you old warhorses - aspiring to be there one day, still paddling.  A treat to travel with you guys and glad to be at your service - it's worth every bit of effort for the camaraderie.  Plus, I'm banking on karma!!!  Cheesy

There is something about a Rainbow in canoe country that's extra special to me. My idea of hope springing eternal.
