Col. Knot - you need to recruit Magic Paddler!  He is your secret weapon in squirrel Psych-OPS.  Seriously!  I found out on this past trip he has a gift - he's a squirrel whisperer!  I think he willed that squirrel and at least one other to leap into the water despite the threat of monster pike in the vicinity!  You shoulda heard him chattering it up with those squirrels.  On our last camp on Basswood he constantly had these couple of pine squirrels racing up and down his hammock trees and cutting pine cones, dropping them onto his tarp.  I swore they were gonna be in that hammock with him if he weren't careful about zipping up...surprised he didn't wake up from one of his (well deserved) naps with one sitting on his chest.  Just sayin'....good to know who your friends are!

Today's POD is an excellent example of just how far a red squirrel will go to frustrate it's foe.

PK, just how long did it take you do climb up there to retrieve your stolen boot?

You are so funny, Jimbo!!  Actually, that boot was hanging there on my portage from Cap into Boulder this past June.  That portage did almost kill me but at least I made it through with my boots still on.  I really wondered about the guy who now only had one boot.  I looked around for the other boot really hoping I would not find a one-booted body.  As I completed this brutal never-again portage, all I could think was, "How the heck could someone either not realize he dropped a boot or finish this portage with only one boot? Also, who hung the damn thing from the branch?"    Huh  Grin

If your serious about keeping pests from chewing up your pack, there are some things you can do to stop it.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

That hot pepper spray would be good on packs.

You can buy Bitter Green Apple spray, that works too.

I almost finished a muddy portage once with only one boot.  The mud sucked my boot right off and it was heck getting it out of there!  At the end I waded into the water and cleaned up both boots before moving on.  I miss canoe-tripping.  I do NOT miss muddy boot-sucking portages!!   Roll Eyes

I KNOW THAT BOOT!  MP and I saw that same dang boot on our June trip as well.  PK, are you SURE that was Cap to Boulder?  We only went as far east as Roe to get into Raven and would not have done that portage, as when leaving Raven/Roe we went back west to Sagus.  We did not take a pic.  The only other explanation is that we saw it's mate going the other way, of similar fate.  Crazy boots.

You probably don't want to know.  Red squirrels have a "piranha mode" from what I've been told.

There is a pair of purple Teva sandals buried on the Sue Falls portage.  If you find them, you can have them.

On second thought, I want them back.
