Today's POD:  Keats end of the portage from McDougall?

I remember putting the canoe on belay on that one (although it seemed further down the rock face at the time).

DD,

Those doing THAT portage are mainly chewing grass and sporting horns on their heads!

Jimbo    Cool

Just call me "Billy."

There are some "albums" that provided a collection from different time periods, but thanks for the enlightenment (since I have essentially zero experience in the BWCAW).

From the sounds of it, looks like this trip has arrived none too soon.  Hope your stay on the big water brings you some chill.  Bon Voyage!   Smiley

I could tell today's POD was BWCA right off the bat.  Simply note that radioactive bright spot, glowing in the center, emanating from the bottom of the lake.  Probably explains some of the fishing issues we experienced this year.

Re: PK, he can no longer give red squirrels a piece of his mind to achieve peace of mind.  He is well past that point now. There is little left. Thus he must return to the wilderness at once to retrieve those pieces of mind that he left there or, perhaps, find some new pieces.

Hey, I can think of no better place to lose one's old mind... and find pieces for a fresh new one.  I DO wish I was going with him.  I've been going nuts and feeling squirrelly lately, too.

Maybe Pk can learn something from this guy who refused to let this Red Squirrel intimidate him.  Wink Grin Grin

Red squirrel raises its paw in defeat rather than risk getting impaled by this feisty Woodpecker.

All I remember for sure is Keats to McDougall was a serious uphill climb. The guy carrying the canoe on that trip wanted to go back to our camp on Keats via Chatterton because of the downhill risk involved.

His preference made perfect sense to me. Falling uphill has always seemed way preferable to falling downhill, to me at least. Plus it was his canoe so I wasn't going to argue. Wink

A few years back I was over on Keats on a day trip from my camp on McDougall.  My paddling partner suggested we eyeball that portage as a "shortcut" back to camp.  One glimpse at it was enough for me to "wave the white flag", even though all we had with us was the empty Kevlar canoe & a little fishing gear.

Maybe I would have tackled it as a "challenge" in my youth.  Maybe.  We did crazy stuff like that back then, pre-double-level back fusion, pre-full hip replacement.  I'm thinking doing the Keats-to-McDougall portage would have brought those surgeries on a few years earlier.  Unnecessarily, too, considering the alternative route back includes the Chatterton-to-McDougall portage, one of the easiest in the entire park (though Three Mile Lake-to-Wolsely is probably even easier).

By my reckoning, Keats-to-McDougall appeared to be one of Quetico's classic "billy goat" trails.  I'd put Poohbah-to-Wink in that category, too, along with half-a-dozen others of that ilk that we tackled in our bygone years.

Thanks, but I'll pass on those, going forward....

Kudos to DD... but me-thinks HE may have left a few too many pieces of HIS mind out in the park, too.

The McDougall-to-Keats fiasco was only a bit of temporary insanity.

On the other hand, Baird-to Keats, which I did on a solo trip, was for those who are completely whacked out and in need of hospitalization.  I don't recall any other time when I was down on hands and knees crawling up over a wet and slippery rock face dragging my canoe up a foot or two at a time.  And this was just one of the challenges on this portage.

I remember consulting with "Tripper" before that trip to see if he had any intel about that portage.  His advise:  "Bring a rope!"  I'd say his recommendation was spot on!

Gotta love a challenge!  I've done both of those...back to back once, even.  We did McDougall into Keats coming at it from the tame end with absolutely no prior knowledge of what awaited us at the far side - ignorance is bliss, they say!  I gotta say I didn't realize HOW steep that was until I got to the bottom and looked up. Oh...and no rope.  Glad it wasn't raining too.  Seems I've blocked most of the Baird portage from memory - they say the mind will do that with traumatic events.   Cheesy

Now...where's my coat with the sleeves that buckle in the back.... Roll Eyes

I did Keats to Baird one fall and was mightily impressed. It goes up and up and then up, comes down in a rush and tumbles right into a swamp. A truly great portage.
