Magic,

What I thought was truly amazing was how you managed to hold onto your camera and snap that shot even as you were falling off the cliff into Veron Lake.

Even so, your picture turned out 100X better than mine!

You being a gear nut you need a better camera. Look for something that is small and light but can get good pictures.  This site has some people that could help with some suggestions.

From the looks of that sky, it would appear the Weather Gods were less than pleased about MP falling in the lake Roll Eyes

Actually, I was noticing that big old white pine instead of the sky..my first thought after reading Jimbo's caption of MP falling into the lake was that the big pine was leaning over either to see if MP was ok, or more likely laughing at/with him.... Undecided Grin

I have a Nikon Coolpix W300 that I am really liking.  It is small, not very heavy, and I wear it around my neck on a lanyard.  It is waterproof, so you can do underwater shots, or not worry about it with the weather.  Easy to use, and I find I am using it more than my bigger camera most of the time.

  That's a nice reflective pic SP2 Smiley

I have a older Samsung digital point and shoot. It has 5x zoom BUT it's not a all-weather camera which I worried about at first.

I bought a neck lanyard and keep that camera right in my left shirt pocket in a ziplock bag. My next camera will be a all-weather one but this has done well considering what I put it thru. With that lanyard I never worry about dropping it and it's always there when I need it.

One thing about a nice little camera like that is the ability to catch a pic at a moment notice. Wildlife pics can happen anytime and you don't often have much time to take the pic.

With that small point and shoot on Auto setting, it's a fairly fast process.

They keep getting better and better. I think the next big step will to get beyond the 5x zoom in an all weather camera point and shoot camera. It's a technical issue that some smart person will figure out.

I have had a waterproof/underwater camera for many years, and this is my third one.  The first one got dropped on a terazzo floor and the screen shattered.  My second Pentax W300 was a great little camera.   But there was a limit to the minutes that you are supposed to keep it under the water.  I loaned it to our grandchildren when we were in the Caribbean, so that they could take underwater sting ray photos.  I forgot to tell them that 30 minutes was the max--and when they gave it back to me it was toast.  Fortunately the card was still OK, so we didn't lose the photos that they were taking.  When I tried to get another Pentax, they were "between models", and I ended up just getting this little Nikon.  I like it better than the Pentax.  It wasn't cheap, but not prohibitive either.

That Fish stringer in today's POD is the exact same one I've used for years.

Like those ORANGE grippers, it's an item that gives you a lot of service for a minimal price.  Smiley

ST,

I used them for years & years but recently gave up on them.  The clasps kept popping open.  I was losing fish!  I found I was having to double and even triple-up on them for security.  Anyway, in the past two years I've gone back to using your basic line with a metal ringlet on one end and a metal "threader" on the other.  Fish NEVER come off of that one!

BTW, I'm pretty sure today's POD was taken at my infamous "whippoorwill" island camp on Cirrus Lake in May a few years back. The frenzied song of those birds was EVERYWHERE and in feverish pitch ALL NIGHT LONG! Seemed like there were HUNDREDS of them but, more likely, there were perhaps only a dozen (maybe only a half-dozen) in the vicinity... and I'm guessing it was prime mating season.  Anyway, I have never heard anything like it before.  The funny thing was, the park ranger who handed us our permit at the beginning of the trip had suggested, "You might want to keep your ears open for the joyous sound of a whippoorwill.  We've heard rumors they may be trying to make a comeback in the park."  Frankly, I had never heard one there before.  As it turned out, that section of Cirrus Lake was absolutely infested with them!

A week or two later I sent the park a note confirming their "suspicions."

I've never had that popping open issue with mine BUT being solo, I've never had more than a few fish on at a time, usually just a small one for a meal.

I have a back-up, of course, one just like yours. Wink
