Nice to see younger folks involved in the outdoors.

That is my oldest son, Matt, at the outflow of the Granite River into Saganaga.  He was 16 at the time.  Now 30 and living in Seattle, he comes out for a Q trip about every 3-4 years or so....

I hadn't been to this area since about 1995.  It used to be closed off till mid-June as it is a major walleye spawning area...not sure if that's still the case.  Also, there's big smallies there as well....caught a 20-in smallie about a foot from the drop with Matt in this pic watching....  Smiley

On June 20, 2006, we were hoping to camp in Red Rock Bay and target the smallies and walleye.  We thought the Cavity Lake fire stayed to the south, but apparently it was too close and the campsites were closed...sigh.  So we ended up moving east to the Granite River outlet into Sag....found decent campsites and fishing....  Smiley

Glad you liked this POD....it was taken on July 29, 2007.  I was taking 5 teens on a 10-day loop from EP16 (Moose River N) up to Lady Boot Bay and back down thru Oyster and Nina Moose.  We packed up and were on the water before sunrise to experience paddling for 30 minutes in the darkness and dense fog as we moved from Boulder Bay of Lac La Croix to Lady Boot Bay.  Ben, my #2 son and 15 at the time, provided most of our horsepower on this calm but foggy morning....

Those calm foggy quiet mornings are in my top 5 favorite things to experience in canoe country.

Well, there is fog and then there is FOG!

Three years ago, I and my paddling partner (each of us in solos) departed the northern arm of Roland Lake heading south through the major part of the lake and ultimately onward to Crooked Lake.  That morning the fog was so thick that you could barely make out the end of your own canoe.  Luckily, we both had a map-based GPS system with the portage to Middle Roland marked.  We kept our bearing by repeatedly inspecting our position relative to the portage.  There were times that I could hear the paddle strokes of my partner, but could not see him at all.  We made it across without incident, but it was definitely "flying blind."

Had this been a motor lake, I would have had to stay put until visibility improved.  As we entered the main part of the lake, we could hear the voices of a party occupying the campsite along the northwest shore of Roland, but we never laid eyes on them.

This was one of the few cases where I was absolutely dependent on the technology to make safe passage.  I do remember once when I departed from a pier in a small motor boat, striking out into dense fog.  I was certain that I was on the heading I'd planned.  After a half-hour a shape began to appear in the fog.  After another minute, I was able to make it out.  It was the pier I had departed from a half-hour earlier.  Roll Eyes

The good thing about thick morning fog is the calm conditions.  Here's some more pics as we left the campsite and as the sun began to burn off the fog.  By the time we reached the LLC pictos, the day was bright and still calm...
