The Quetico Lodge & Conference Center

Well, I have some truly good news for paddlers looking for lodging & meals near the eastern end of Quetico Park.  The former Quetico College School has been reincarnated in the form of "The Quetico Lodge and Conference Center."  See: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I've spoken directly with Reagan Hall, one of the new proprietors, who was able to answer several of my questions.  Rooms are available at $80/night and this includes a complimentary breakfast.  Suppers (or even "bag lunches" for your first day in the park) may be arranged with advance notice.  Furthermore, their nice indoor swimming pool  should be fully functional this summer.  Apparently, Reagan and his wife, Cynthia, have many other enhancements planned for the facility, as well.

Many of us who have spent our "night-before" (and, perhaps, our first night "after" leaving the park) at this facility were much saddened to learn that The Quetico College School had to close.  To see the property come back again in this more-hospitality-focused iteration is REALLY good news!  If your plan is to enter Quetico Park using Baptism, Pickerel or Stanton Bay "entry points", the location is perfect.  The beautiful venue hasn't changed so, frankly, if the food and hospitality matches or surpasses what we've experienced in the past, I might be inclined in the future to always bypass Atikokan, no matter where I was entering the park.  In fact, I have spent an entire week there in a rental house by Eva Lake when I put together a reunion with some old friends.  We had a great time... and only once ever drove over to Atikokan (I had to buy a new fishing reel).

In any case, I wanted to flag this new resource for QJ'ers, especially as so many of us are now planning our summer adventures.  Just ask any QJ'er who has stayed there before... it beats ANYTHING in the region!

FYI

This is truly great information! Cool
Hopefully, this thread can be “pinned” to the top for handy reference. Hopefully, they can do some advertising to get enough customer base to be viable. The meals options are great. The nearest food is In Atikokan. I would use them for any northern entry point. Just drive up the scenic North Shore Drive. Awesome way to begin a trip!  Cool

The website doesn't say anything about a complimentary breakfast.  So it would be prudent to call if breakfast is a feature you are interested.  Also, remember the Canadian exchange rate is about 70% of the US dollar.  So you only pay $56 a night.

The Quetico Lodge & Conference Center operation is brand new so I expect they will tweak the website layout as time goes on.  What I DO know is that the owner (Reagan Hall), during our phone call, distinctly indicated that "complimentary breakfasts" are offered to overnight lodgers.

I suppose it would also be prudent to specify on the website whether their nightly room rate is expressed in American or Canadian dollars.  For what it's worth, I DO believe Westwood is probably correct... nightly rates are most likely expressed in Canadian dollars.  Either way, it equals or beats anything you can find further west in Sapawe or Atikokan.  Of course, there is nothing at all within reasonable distance further east, unless you count the Dawson Campground.

The nearest reasonable competitor for lodging that I can find is the Sapawe Diner & Motel, located about 15 minutes to the west.  While they are a newer facility, the room rates seem (to me, at least) rather exorbitant (nearly double) and, again, there is no mention of complimentary breakfasts.  Even White Otter Inn in Atikokan, as tired & outdated as it is, comes in at a higher rate (offering the memorable local ambiance of railroad tracks and The Beer Store).  As far as the Atikokan Hotel goes, I've been told it has been shut down (though I don't know that to be a fact).  I'll not soon forget the month my wife and I spent there one night 20+ years ago... no AC, windows nailed shut, ceiling fan not working properly and the first-come-first served "shared bathroom" a long ways down the hall.

Comparatively speaking, I'll take the QLCC over any of these other options.

Later,

Jimbo,

The Atikokan Hotel is shut down as of my 2018 Fubar Trip. Q-Dave told me it was due to mismanagement and left a lot of people upset over it.

The White Otter isn't the best place because it's noisy and not very well kept.

That QLCC sounds like a winner if you want to lodging in the area. Gotta to love that exchange rate too.

If I'm not mistaken, Jimbo and I were the 2nd and 3rd customers to use this facility (other than students), when it was being operated as Quetico College School.  At that stage, Michael Heaton (Head Master) was in the process of reviving the facility, but even then ... well let me put it this way ... have you ever been tense from a long drive and suddenly find yourself in an "oasis?"  Shoulders drop, a deep breath.  This is pretty close to heaven!

Well, now you have some idea what this facility is like.  Not only do you get a very nice room.  Not only (at least historically) do you get excellent meals.  During our visit, we went to a "game room" (actually a building which is where the swimming pool and if I remember correctly a small basketball court) were located.  Tennis courts, conference buildings, cabins, well kept walkways for a leisurely walk after dinner ... maybe even go down by the lake.  All of this set back from the highway where it is very quiet ... except for the occasional take-off/landing of a float plane on the lake.

I mean ... COME ON!  Don't second guess this one.  It's an absolute gem.

(The foregoing is not a paid commercial indorsement and I do not have any affiliation with this facility.)

The one time I stayed there the quiet is what struck me too.  Several areas on the large property looked like they needed renovating and maybe the new owners have cash for that.  This could truly turn into an exceptional place.
