I watch a lot of YouTube too....good, bad, indifferent, whatever!  This morning I was watching a criminal defense attorney discussing the covid, constitutional rights, and traveling to one's second home.  His take on traveling is that if you travel from another state, you are covered by personal rights by the constitution.  I guess there are some loop-holes in local government that do allow your local governor to be able to make demands on his own state  constituents but cannot overstep the general constitutional rights we all have..... Huh
ALSO a good documentary about "the origin of the Covid-19 virus" on YouTube which discusses Wuhan, a biological labratory, a female scientist who had been studying the SARS virus and who (God know why !!!) also did some combining with the HIV virus to attain those "crowns/immunity attackers" from it and attached them to SARS.  She wrote a paper about her findings back in December (?...was published in a reputable journal) and apparently somehow lost control of what she developed and it ended up somehow infecting the wet market (Less than 10 miles from her lab) we all know about now.  Since then she is AWOL in China and her research paper has been "lost or missing".
Don't know if that documentary is still available on YouTube but it is worth a watch if you are interested and can find it.
Soooooo glad I live on the fringes of society, have access to a big food garden this summer to stock up with, and am a retiree who doesn't mind being home and flying solo.     IC

Well put.

Effective leadership requires humility in the face of the vastness of the unknown. To claim possession of the answer before an understanding of the question is folly.

There is also the need in MOST of us to fight back when attacked. No other Potus has been attacked like this 24/7 since the day they took office.

When 99% of the coverage you get is NEGATIVE even when you've done many POSITIVE things like building the economy, you develop a BUNKER mentality.

Yup, he doesn't take criticism very well but when that's ALL you get, you tend to overcompensate and not in a good way.

I was right with Solus until I read the New York Times and NPR which are among the worst IMHO on fact-checking. But hey, that's me.

Bottom line this Covid-19 crisis is laying a lot of weak links in this country's armor open for all to see.
I hope we learn something when the dust is settled.

One thing I think we all can agree on is voting in the 2020 election is going to be one of the most consequential votes you'll EVER cast.

This country is at a fork in the road. The END destinations are so far apart, it will take decades or maybe never IF we choose wrong and want to go in the other direction.

I'm voting even if I have to wear a hazmat suit to do it.  Wink Grin Grin

I do watch Fox News with an awareness of their bias. I also voted for Trump in the last election and will likely vote for him in the next one. Our country and world is facing down a crisis unlike any other in our lifetime. IMO, everyone got it wrong early on. I didn’t think it was a big deal until mid-March. I thought it was an overreaction to cancel Copia, but was quickly proven wrong. They made the right call. That’s small potatoes.

I tend to evaluate politicians and others by what they do more than by what they say. I don’t like a lot of what Trump says. I am not a fan of the self-congratulations. But, I do like most of what he has done. Closing travel to and from China and Europe turns out to have been wise, for example. Also, the guidelines have proven to be effective. He has been effective in ramping up production of PPE and ventilators.

It is up to the state governments to make decisions regarding their states and the federal government is the backstop. The media seems to have it backwards on this point. Back in my heyday, I responded in disaster relief to 9/11, Katrina, Sandy, and many others. FEMA came in to provide coordination between the affected states, but the states made the calls. States had their own stockpiles of food, water, medicines, etc. We have had an unprecedented number and severity of disasters in recent years which no doubt led to a depletion of state and federal stockpiles. We also made a huge strategic error in trusting China to provide our medicines and PPE. My points are that assigning blame is not helpful, and that we, as a country, need to focus on solutions. Just like we got free of OPEC, we need to be free of communist China government. I hope one day that the Chinese people can be free of the communist government.

One of my news sources is our state government health department daily updates. Our Minnesota governor seems to be inclined to keep us locked down. He is likely to experience a similar reaction to Michigan. He is considering closing the BWCAW, for example. One of the factors that affects me personally is that I had knee replacement in the last round of surgeries at Mayo before the shutdown. My rehab is going well, and I look forward to getting out of the house and doing more walking and hiking. I’m starting to go ‘shacky wacky’.

New York Times is one of the most rigorous journalism outlets in terms of "facts". Their op ed and story selection lean left but they are one of the most reliable sources for information (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

NPR again left-center bias but  again "Very High for factual reporting due to thorough sourcing and very accurate news reporting."

The key is thorough sourcing and accurate reporting.

How does Fox fare?
To quote:"Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to editorial positions and story selection that favors the right. We also rate them Mixed factually and borderline Questionable based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared. Further, Fox News would be rated a Questionable source based on numerous failed fact checks by hosts and pundits, however straight news reporting is generally reliable, therefore we rate them Mixed for factual reporting."

I very much dislike all politicians, especially the ones who started as lawyers, which is nearly all of them.

Winston Churchill commented that "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all of the others"

That is the way I feel about the current president, he is horrible, except for all of the other choices we were faced with, left or right.

Re: media, unfortunately, we should probably listen to both Fox and CNN, then plant our flag somewhere in the middle, per our own best judgment.

Actually, I've taken "the road less traveled."  I don't watch either.

I did give FOX a listen a couple of times in the beginning, but soon classified it as a complete joke with respect to news coverage.  It was about that time I began my checklist of what not to watch.

Rule #1:  Don't watch a news outlet that is controlled by a billionaire unless you want to be swayed by the billionaire's propaganda.  (Removed FOX, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal from my list.)

Rule #2:  If your critical dialogue to the TV runs longer than the "news" broadcast, turn it off.  (Scratch CNN, MSNBC).

Rule #3:  Know what the political bent of a news source is before you invest time with it.  (If you are so naive as to believe the New York Times and NPR are not going to have a liberal tilt, you are simply not paying attention.)

Rule #4:  If TV coverage of "news" has more than 2 talking heads (broadcaster and 2 "others"), turn it off.

Rule #5:  If you spend more time fact checking a source that it took to extract information from it, flush it down the toilet.

I will stop here.  I'm sure you don't want to see the next 20 or so.  (BTW:  News sources in parentheses is intended to represent an example and not an exhaustive list.)

I also hope you are not cursed with an analytic mind.  Would you like to hear how I parse TV commercials?  No, I didn't think so!  My wife knows full well that watching TV with me is not a "spectator sport."

What we tend to watch or listen to is mostly conformational bias which reinforce our current biases.  We're just emotionally comfortable there.  It takes an open mind to actually listen to opposing view points (remember reading is just another form of listening) and then make decisions based on that information....either incorporate it or reject it.
Reasonable people will come to the correct decision.
Albert Einstein said "For every problem there is one solution which is neat, simple and wrong".

Stay safe.........

I look at results and if we have real death rates and overflow of hospitals that are higher than other countries are having I will say he/we has not done a good job. Just curious how would you compare the seriousness of covid-19 as far as ability to put people in the hospital to other seasonal diseases.

Solus,

Who checks the FACT CHECKERS?
I watch Fox news more often than any other mainstream media outlet.

I've watched LIBERAL guests and MORE than few Fox OPINION people go hard after the President.

I rarely see that on the other outlets. If they do have a Conservative on they often shout them down or constantly interrupt them.

On Fox, you have the people that present the news and then the Opinion people. They are clearly marked as such.

You go to most other mainstream news stations you see NEWS people making OPINION/COMMENTARY interjecting THEIR bias as presenting it as fact.

The recent Covid-19 briefing where they played the video montage of news organizations downplaying the Covid-19 danger and the timeline of the WH response as Jimbo said, condemned them with their own words.

When I was in the Army 68-70 there was a lot going on. Racial tensions at home carried over into the Armed forces.

I met guys from virtually every state and territory.
I had rednecks/city-country blacks, surfer dudes and cowboys from out west.

One thing MOST of us could agree on, except the people we bonded over NOT liking.

No matter WHAT color/race, the people from NYC in fact most big cities were universally DISLIKED by all.

NYC was the worst. EVERYTHING according to them was BETTER than any other place. Every one of them, big/little had a mouth on them like a character from the classic mob movie Wiseguys. They ALL thought they were tough guys. I know firsthand that wasn't even close to the truth.

President Trump is your classic NYC guy PLUS he's a salesman. I apologize to any QJ members who are in sales, but we've all dealt with salespeople that are overbearing/braggarts and that have questionable relationships with the truth, at least part of the time.

I like MOST of what he's done but wouldn't want to be his buddy. I DON'T have to LIKE someone on a personal level to RESPECT the job they've done.
I hate my auto mechanic but he's a great mechanic and works for a fair price.

I'll probably do what I did the last election, vote for the least objective choice based on their performance NOT their personalities.

Up till this point, my Liberal friends were bragging to me how much their 401k and stocks were soaring.
Some reluctantly gave the President credit for it.
Then they tell me they wouldn't vote for him because they don't "like" him?

I don't get that but that's me.
