db,

Just a tad "pricey" at $566, wouldn't you say?

Would expect a living plant aquarium with 90% of the species list in the book with that kind of price tag....

P.S.  Make that an autographed aquarium.

Throw in a lifetime supply of Portage Monkeys and Nubile camp cooks and you might have a deal!  Shocked Wink Grin Grin

Nice morning shot today. I never used to bring spinnerbaits to the Q but do now. My local favorite fishing lake which is a Largemouth Bass tournament favorite lake has a small population of Walleye.

I don't fish for them but was surprised to see they love a small spinnerbait the same way the bass do.
Never really thought of spinnerbaits for Walleye.

The small NP in the lake like them to much.  Tongue Grin Grin

I'd let lightly used copy go for $400 and I'd pay shipping! Heck, I'd even throw in some BWJs from back in the day. Smiley

Today's POD isn't in the Q, but on the Missanabie River
in Ontario, pre Q days.

Circa about 1984. I was about 36 in this shot.
This was when before I became a solo paddler.

You can't tell from the shot, but the guy whose turn it was to plan the trip for our 4 man group failed to do his due diligence as usual.

This was before any of us had Internet. He saw an ad for the outfitter in an outdoor magazine and made the reservations. All he asked was if they had access to the Missanabie River and if they rented canoes.

Turned out the lodge was on a lake chain about 2-3 portages from the river. They had only 2 canoes.
The one seen in the background was an 18' Grumman and the one I'm in is a 20' Square stern freighter canoe!!

Turns out the canoes were mostly for people who wanted to stay and fish/sightsee on the lodge lake.

The access to the river was for motorized fishing boats they kept there.

So after much finger-pointing between the guy who failed to ask enough questions and the outfitter who didn't like being screamed at, we ended up taking them.

The portages were brutal to carry that freighter canoe across. Ended up with 4 of us having to do it.

Once on the river, it was okay except in the wider parts of the river where the current was slow and the wind was in our face.

That 20' canoe was like paddling a couch down the lake. When we arrived at our pick-up point which was a small campground with a boat launch for motorboats the guys there came down to ask where the HELL had we come from?? And more importantly why are we in a square stern freighter canoe sans motor?

Highlight of the trip for me was coming out of the concrete men's bathroom and almost bumping into a #500 black bear who was sauntering down the road heading for the enclosed fish cleaning station.

Bear just gave me a quick glance and kept walking.
I went back to our camp where we had to spend the night before being picked-up and made everyone hang their food packs.

Later on that night a couple of campsites over some guys were in the back of their pick-up camper and a bear tried to come in thru the screen door.

They beat it off by throwing a pot of hot coffee on it. Bear ran off but didn't leave the area. Didn't get much sleep that night.

The next morning we packed up and took our gear down to the parking lot to wait for the outfitter.

The rangers showed up armed with shotguns because that bear was a nuisance now and sooner or later someone was going to get mauled/killed.

ST,

They say a picture is worth a thousand words (well, in your case, just 478 this time).  I love it how an old pic can stir up memories and some pretty good stories.  It would be a real kick to see more such old pics AND the stories behind them from QJ members.  I'm thinking of a few of my own that have stories behind them that might be worth sharing.  Guess I'll have to dredge them up sometime soon and submit.

Thanks for sharing the tale, ST.  I would have pegged you as being a bit younger than you say in this pic.

I was inspired to send some old pics in because for a while there we were seeing other people's throwback pics which I really enjoyed.

I hope others submit some old pics and maybe the story behind them.

My Dr says my biological age is about 10 yrs less than my chronological age. So I'm going with 62 instead of 72!  Wink Grin Grin

Today's POD is circa 1985. My first and only trip to the BWCA.
There was 6 of us, 3 of them were guy's that were friends of my friends and had NEVER canoed before.

2 were from Georgia. Had never seen that much fresh water in their lives. One of them a guy named Whitey freaked out when he saw me drinking water out of the middle of a big lake.

Those SB were caught from the spill out at Louisa Falls. We stayed at the campsite next to falls.

We got there late in the day and after swimming in the falls we set camp. They wanted to relax and broke out the booze and pot. I put my bathing suit on and waded out waist deep and started pitching a little 1/4 jig with yellow curly tail in to the gravel spillway.

Every cast I caught a 2-4 lb fish. We decided we'd have a big fish fry. I caught and kept the best ones while the guy's got a fire going and were cleaning them.

I was so excited catching all those fish, I lost track of time and it got dark real fast when the sun went down, something I wasn't used to.

I get back to camp and find they had already fried up most of the fish, leaving me a few measly fillets!

They said they couldn't wait they had the munchies!  Wink Grin Grin

I got my "revenge" the next morning when ALL of them came back from the Thunderbox in horror because they Huh Shocked Shocked Cry Cry had WORMS in their poo!

Turns out being drunk/stoned isn't best when you're trying to fry fish to the right temp.

They had eaten breaded fish that wasn't cooked well enough to kill the worm bacteria.
I cooked my own and had no issues.

For the rest of the trip they were looking/worrying they had some rare fish-borne illness. I was the only one that ate fish after that too. Wink Grin

Went we got home they all went to the Dr to be checked out. That taught them not to start a fish dinner without me.  Grin Grin

I am going to look up some vintage photos that I can share.  Won't have any story as good as the fish worms (ick) but maybe I can at least play this game.  Hard to find photos I haven't posted here before, but I'll try.  And, realistically, probably people won't remember if they were posted before anyway.
