IC's bird looks familiar!

Jimbo  Cool

That was the year I met IC and Ranger and Penny met us there. IC told me she would be easy to spot.

As I scanned ahead for her campsite, I saw the Pink Flamingo waving in the breeze. IC also had a brightly colored tarp she made over the firepit area.

I don't know if I sent this pic in for a POD, so if not here is the whole group. 2 Ladies, one handsome young man, and an old grizzled Lion.  Smiley Grin Grin

ST,

As you know, you can see those danged Pink Flamingoes from a mile away or so.  This is precisely what drew the original Bushwhackers Jamboree flock together (of which IC was a founding member of the tribe/flock/whatever).  My son had wondered what I was carrying in a VERY light old green army bag in the very back of our canoe.  Upon our arrival at the our island campsite on Cairn Lake, I instructed him to open the bag and "deploy the birds".  In short order, several parties spotted them, then joined us on our VERY fogbound, dreary, dripping island... and we had a blast!

About a month after my story about Bushwhackers Jamboree appeared in the Boundary Waters Journal, Piragis began to sell "pink flamingo campsite markers."  Coincidence??  I think not.   I had the chance to plead my case (ie. you dudes ripped off my idea!) to no avail to the folks manning the Piragis CanoeCopia booth the following year.

It was the infamous "Stumpy" (Bushwhackers Jamboree was HIS brainchild, only the flamingoes were mine) who contacted me to let me know about Piragis purloined product.  He said, "Jimbo, those guys don't market ANYTHING unless it's a real money-maker for them."  I believe that item stayed in their catalog for five years or more.

And, as Paul Harvey would say, "and now you know the rest of the story."

Today's POD is perfect for a Sunday morning Smiley

The only thing I'd add is a steaming cup of coffee, with maybe a little Irish in it.  Wink Grin

This photo is one that actually does take me back, almost in a physical way, to the place and time.  We were staying at the much-desired only campsite on Little Caribou Lake, and this little spot was my place to be quietly alone.  There was often a cup of coffee with me as I would sit on this little stool and read my book, but for sure there was a camera around my neck in case a moose should happen to stroll by!  This particular spot close to the lake was not where it was seen by people if they were paddling by, and was near the landing area; the main campsite is on a higher level that overlooks a bend in the small, narrow lake (which has the feel of a river, actually.)  I called it my "grotto".  I would often seek out a similar place at a campsite, especially if we were spending more than one day.  Being alone, watching the water, the dragonflies and butterflies, looking for wildlife, reading, meditating, praying, writing in my journal. . .these were renewing moments for my spirit.

Just seeing this photo again today brought back that sense of peace and joy.

Oh, and if the coffee were to have anything in it--that would be Kentucky bourbon!   Grin

He does.  His senior year in wood-shop he made a bent shaft paddle and hasn't had a chance to use it yet.  Well, he's had chances but he insists the first water it touches to be Beaverhouse.

PJ, I applaud your son's high paddling standards!  There may be hope for a next paddling generation yet....

When I was this kid's age back in the old days, the biggest fish I ever caught would be BAIT for that one!

I am not usually a huge fan of "person with big fish" photos, but I absolutely LOVE this one!  It looks like it could have been shot for a magazine cover--so beautifully color-coordinated with the boy's clothing and that blue canoe!  And to think that the boy is now a grown man. . .just a perfect photo of boy and fish!  Made me smile.   Smiley
