Pretty sure it’s illegal to hang them on a fish stringer. Pretty stiff fine if caught, plus confiscation of all your gear. But, if taken legally, they make a great chowder. Some say the taste resembles lake trout. You be the judge. Wink Wink

ST,

I've always liked the way you set up your camp.  Do you find it necessary to put the tent tarp on, too, when rain or spray off the lake is blowing sideways?

Jimbo, I rarely put the tent tarp on. The exception is when the wind changes and it's coming straight into the Dry-Fly.

If possible, I like to set up facing south. My side wings are closer to the ground than this set-up most of the time.

Where the firepit is in this pic is the lakeside. The rock shields the site from wind/rain and that's why I set it up like that.

A few times like my ice-out trip I used the fly every night to add a little warmth.

I consider my Dry-Fly the best single piece of gear I ever bought.

Hello All, the PODs from Rawn remind me of a mystery from our groups stay there a few years ago.  We stayed at the campsite at the West end of the lake, near the portage to Art.  Back in the woods, high on a tree is a old plaque.  I don't remember what it said, but it had names and dates, I think.  One of our group asked a Quetico ranger if he knew the origin and he did not.  I know it's a long shot but I thought I'd throw it out to the group and see if anyone else has seen it, and knows the story.

See it?  Heck, MagicPaddler set the thing in place himself, commemorating his first solo trip as a young boy, back in 1903!

It was a pretty impressive achievement, given it was already late October when he shoved off from his home from the nearby shores of Lake Michigan.  It was full-on November and quite windy by the time he crossed and reached Superior... and we all know what the big lake is like "when the gales of November blow early."

Clearly it was an arduous journey, the significance of which can hardly be captured by one small plaque put in place on Rawn Lake, the terminus of his travel that season due to the lakes freezing over.

Maybe there will yet be a POD showing the remains of the small cabin (@200 meters west into the woods) Magic built and wintered in that bitter cold year?  Last time I visited, it was on its last legs, so to speak, but I know it was his as I found an old bottle of stool softener half-buried in the duff. In fact, that was the actual origin of the QJ member custom/tradition of surreptitiously slipping such bottles into another QJer's pack when they're not looking.  Just ask Magic, the stuff can come in handy on a cold winter's morning!

Alas, but that is a tale to be shared in conjunction with some future POD....

Jim it was on a solo and I took a picture of it.  I looked for the picture but could not find it. Any one got a picture of it?
