Today's POD reminds me of times I was in the middle of a lake and wondering if I made the right decision as the weather rolls in?  Undecided Wink Grin

I agree. But sometimes you take the chance. I remember canoeing the Churchill River in Manitoba for a month we had extra days for storm days planned, but if that happens everyday, you must make a choice whether to risk it. Having three foot waves within and inch of overtopping the gunnel is scary.

Another time on our last day coming out of Birch to Sucker, it snowed that night and storm the next day, we couldn’t even put in at the portage with rollers coming in and the wind coming straight up Moose so you couldn’t get on the leeward side. We wanted to get back out on schedule. Sometimes you’re not thinking correctly. Diverted and Canoed around to PP and took us 8 hours to canoe down Moose Lake. I broke my favorite paddle pulling against the wind.

As a solo paddler I understand about taking the chance more than many do. No-one to blame if you choose wrong. No-one to help if things go bad either.
When you take that calculated risk and come out okay it's a great feeling.

I’ve only solo a few times and understand. We once met a solo canoeist from Montana on Prairie Portsge and he told us his tale of woo. He was canoeing up LZLC and got blown back by the wind. Tripped on a portage and punctured a hole in his canoe. Was canoeing up to take a picture of a waterfall and flipped when his canoe hit the hydraulic jump between the lake and the water falls and dumped all his gear. Remember that this is mid October and could be life threatening in the cold weather; And we hardly ever see any other canoeist, we are about the last ones there with no one else to help you!

I like to go in early May just after ice-out. My one trip I went in a day to early and got ice-bound on Beaverhouse Lk.

I always run a line between bow/portage yoke. My packs are all rigged to be waterproof, so they will float.
I have a couple of carabiner's on on each pack. I clip the pack to rope so if I dump everything stays with my canoe.

My daypack/dump-pack sits in front of me and that's attached the same way. The pack is lined with a waterproof roll top bag. It holds first-aid gear.

I have a plan if I dump and need to warm-up. I have a few large chemical heat packs in the pack and another 2 in pockets of my PFD. My clothes are all synthetic so they dry fast. Slip a heat pack over each kidney and wrap up in this hooded emergency blanket until I can warm enough to get a fire going.

I have some of those military grade fire cubes. They burn hot for 15 minutes and will ignite even wet wood.

Yup, you better have a plan and the right gear and mindset or else things could spiral beyond your ability to rebound from them.

POD Today, I’d have to research where this photo was taken. My guess is border lakes, Crooked coming in from Argo, or East end Iron.

Today’s POD looks like the canoe is floating in thin air. I love lakes that are so transparent that you can see down 15 or more feet deep. It’s reminds me of Argo lake. Any others?

Marj had the clearest water in the park on the last secchi disk survey I saw. I can no longer find the link. I believe Louisa and Argo were next in line.
