What's the Daniel Boone quote, something like "I have never been lost, but I will admit to being a mite confused for several weeks."

From my experience I turn the map in the direction I'm heading, make sure I have a feel for the scale of the map, use a compass pinned to my life vest, and watch for the points, campsites, portages, where vegetation is worn down.

I'll relate to a story a friend of mine told me that they were camped on an island in Moose Lake out of Ely and had a couple portage through their campsite on the island in the middle of the lake.  They had canoed down the bay of the island and thought they were at the end of the lake. Smiley

When I first started solo tripping, I got "confused" a few times and realized I needed to up my navigation skills. I had learned a lot when I was in the Army (68-70) but because I didn't use them, I forgot much of it.

I bought this book and highly recommend it to ANYONE who goes into the woods/waters.

Once you learn even the bare basics like orientating your map to your direction of travel and learning how to shoot a heading "off" where you want to end-up, you can paddle thru islands/channels and NOT get lost or disorientated.

Nothing is more frustrating than to be turning your map trying to match the terrain while NOT having a compass AND the N/S/E/W marked ON your map to help you match the map to direction of travel.

Land is a lot harder to navigate than water and I learned early on to take a map and compass if I wasn't on a easily walkable island when the wind shifts, the clouds roll inland you realize you stopped paying attention an hour or two ago.

Aiming a little "off" is always good advice.

Today's POD.  I think a frown would've been kinda cool....way more menacing!   That's IF I'm seeing what I "think" I'm seeing.
