I always find it interesting how people trim out their canoes?
IF this is a solo canoe, it appears to be very stern heavy?  It must work for the owner or else it wouldn't be loaded like that.

I just figured Ben was in the process of "unloading."

He's a big guy so, you're right, if he's NOT unloading, breezes would be catching his bow and make navigation tricky.  I understand the bit about using that pack as a backrest. Maybe we can get him to chime in here to further explain what exactly is happening.

I find it ESPECIALLY important to get level-loading squared up well in my own Prism.  I found out the hard way one year when I was too anxious to get my trip started in WCPP.  It was a thrill ride that I didn't want and I was lucky to make it to the other side of the danged lake!

I like my Prism but if I'm not careful to level-load it (heck, even make it a little bow-heavy if there's a strong breeze going), moving in a straight line can be dicey.

I thought he might be unloading as well but that seems like a rough landing for a portage, but maybe not?

Soloing a tandem canoe like I have on all but one trip, you learn real fast when your not trimmed out right.  I've got it down pat now. I also like every below the gunnels because I think wind effects a solo canoe more than a tandem with 2 paddlers.
I use a canoe seat, but see people using packs as well. I think that gets into putting more weight above the water-line than below.

For me that's a non-starter but plenty of more experienced paddlers don't seem to mind.

ST,

Good point on that spot not looking so hot for unloading.  It shall remain a mystery until Ben chimes in, I guess.

I'm definitely with you on the trimming of a canoe. As others will quickly attest, there is seldom a "lack of ballast" in any canoe I've loaded up.  However, I do fairly well keeping those dense bad boys below the gunnels.  I may be paddling a barge but it's usually not a top-heavy one.  That can be bad juju in rough waters!

Later,

Jimbo   Cool

Remember Ben was tripping with a very large dog.

Thanks. This was the first one I built and used on a trip to Sturgeon Lake with my son. The one I used that you missed was #6, a 16 ft. Merlin solo.
