Walter Lk is special to me. Some of my Dad's ashes are sprinkled there. From that island campsite where I saw the hare I named ART after my Dad because he stayed around the whole time I was there.

Walked past the bathtub yesterday morning. It was empty.

Full on my way in, or up.
A quick three nights on Louisa. In Monday out Thursday. Late start on Monday. Didn't clear PP (& Customs) until 12:30pm so I didn't roll into the first portage from Agnes to Louisa until 5:30. 4 canoes (stacked on shore) block my entry, but there are two landings. Go to the other, unload- it's a group, 9 (Scouts), camped on the portage in a flat space not much bigger than a living room. Not very flat. 4 maybe 5 tents, a fire ring, a big tarp and two clothes lines (Tarp and lines are strung across the trail) and 9 guys packed into this space. I walk through with my pack (6" wide corridors between tents) weave through five guys two of which are adults- no one makes eye contact or even seems to notice me. Return trip with pack and canoe requires people to move a bit especially when I have to go into the bush a bit to avoid tarp and lines. My dog avoids the whole scene settling for straight bushwhack around the camp.

There was another group of women in the pool (staying at the site on the other side of the falls).

When checking in with the ranger four uniformed members of Canadian Border Services dropped bags below the ranger station, armored up and extracted firearms which were loaded and a load snapped into the chamber of each of four guns. I came down the hill was approached and politely asked for my RABC, kind of a thrill after all these years. Nice guy- worked the PP station the last year they were open.

Your a better man than I am.
Bad enough they camped like that but lines/tarps across the trail and they let you go around them without a word of apology/explanation or offer to help carry your gear Huh Angry Angry

I would have cut the lines, walked on the tarps and see if anyone had the Cajoles to look me in the eye then?  I'll wager they wouldn't know what to say and that's from dealing with people like this before.

Bear Spray isn't just for 4-legged problem makers.

I hear ya ST, I was grumpy and for the most part held my tongue (Did tell the leader "kind of a tough spot to camp"). I figured they had their penance delivered in the rocky rumpled tent "pads", lack of room and air circulation. It's not a long portage but about as technical as they get. Thankfully I had Louisa to myself for three days other than a pair of canoes that poked just through the narrows for a look one evening before retreating back to Agnes.

It's bad enough adults would be so inconsiderate, even worse they were with Scouts, presumably to teach them the ways of canoe tripping.

Now those kids think that is okay to do! That's why I said what I did. Someone needs to check those adults because the kids are being affected by their ignorance/lack of consideration for other's.

Ditto.

One of the best trips I've ever taken was a solo in late September. One of my main objectives for trip was to find the peace & solitude necessary to get through a mountain of professional certification study materials which I had packed. My routine each day was: I would cruise across the bay each morning to a nice beach across from camp, trolling along the way.  Once there, I'd lay out a blanket and spend hours consuming that gobbledygook in the fresh air and sunshine.  If I hadn't caught something to eat on the way over, I'd always seem to catch a trout on the way back to camp.  Anyway, I ate well, studied well, hardly saw anyone all week long, and passed my exam easily when I returned to civilization. A different kind of trip but a very good one.

On a regular trip, I'm just like ST or the guy in today's POD... I'll have ample reading material for windbound days and just about any night in my hammock tent.

Later,

Nice POD today of that WCPP landmark.  As I recall, the portage trail crosses the stream just above the waterfalls.  Definitely a need to exercise care in times of highwater.  It was a pleasant lake to camp on and good walleye fishing, once you figured out where to find them.
