Anybody have a favorite besides buying a whole new reel/counter combo?

I just put whatever lure in the water, take a couple strokes to make sure it's running as intended... open the bail and count the line distance I want by paddle strokes... close the bail.

As long as I can keep a feel for the right vibration or the bottom, depending... I'm a happy guy.

Ok.

Thanks guys. That's helpful.

I am looking at a couple that you can clip onto the rod. Berkely makes one. So does Rapala. I'm trying to get a bit more precise on my lure deployment to depth.

ST’s suggestion is a way I have started to go - got it from Jon Babulic at BCC who is trout focused and  more often to the east altho ha came from T-bay.  Pretty low tech,  I picked up coupla Fireline 5 x 10-foot colors spools, 10# and 14# for my interests, but not sure if  Fireline is an option anymore…it was just one name Jon gave me.

I found this idea. It's so simple which makes it easy to duplicate. You could use the same principle in a solo or tandem canoe. All my searches show not much accuracy with those clip-on line counters and even with the reel counters unless they are calibrated properly.

Quote:
Simply mark 10 feet from the transom up the gunwale towards the bow. Put the crank bait in the water and unspoool 10′ of line with your thumb on the spool, when the line tightens up, do it again until you reach the desired length. This is WAY more accurate than one of those clip on type line counter
