Brook Trout?

I recently heard that Brook Trout can be found in the streams & ponds surrounding Batchewaung Lake.  As I'll be paddling in that vicinity this Spring, I was wondering if anyone has experience fishing for them there?  Can anyone confirm or deny their existence, particularly on the north side (Jump Lake & the streams nearby)?

I don’t know about that location, but they can be found in some of the streams and rivers of the North Shore and Gunflint Trail. Let us know what you find. Cool

I talked to Quetico Dave about this. He said he had heard the same-thing but didn't know anyone who had actually caught any?

I checked all my maps and Ontario fish on-line and they show Brook Trout in lakes north of Hw 11.

Another native Brook Trout range map shows they should be there?

I see plenty of streams on the NW corner entering Batch. If there are BT there, that's where I would try.

IMHO nothing is better than BT fried in a little oil with some eggs and spuds for a meal.

Thanks, ST!  That's encouragement enough for me to pack some suitable tackle.

If I find any, I'll be sure to let you folks know about it.

Later,

  Jimbo,

If you go to the Ontario fish on-line interactive map you'll see a stream coming out Granite Lake which is outside the park. There are two streams in that NW corner. Might have to park the canoe and walk the stream but that's not a big deal.

One thing I noticed and maybe it means something or not, but the lakes on my map north of Hw 11 that hold Brook/Speckled trout DON'T hold Small Mouth bass?

SM will get into small streams/rivers, where native stream trout live. Maybe the SM being a invasive species are why BT are not in the Q, like you think they would be?

I found this source. Lists all the Brook Trout streams in Ontario by region/township. Maybe this can help you?

In 1970 one member of our group caught BT in Jump Lake.  I never saw the trout, but he said that he caught some trout in Jump Lake.  Hard to believe that it will be 53 years since my second trip into Quetico.
