Pickup Bed Rack/Canoe Transportation

I'm looking for some advice on the best way to transport two canoes using a modern 4-door pickup with a short (6-foot) bed. Ideally, I’d like to keep the cab full with 4 people and the bed packed with gear, which unfortunately rules out the receiver hitch-style bed extenders I’ve used in the past.

To complicate things, about 80% of the roof is taken up by an obnoxiously sized sunroof, so I’m hesitant to use any roof-mounted systems that might accelerate the inevitable leaking issues that come with those.

Has anyone here had experience with a bed rack or over-bed-and-cab rack systems for setups like this? That seems like the most promising route, but I’d love to hear from folks with experience — especially if you have a specific rack system recommendation.

Major bonus points if the rack system allows me to keep my existing tonneau cover in place!

Appreciate your time and sharing any knowledge with me.

Colby

Before I retired I worked building sun roofs for a company that supplies all the Big 3 plus all the major foreign brands.

The sunroof frames even those huge sunroofs are designed to replace the structural strength when you cut out the steel roof.

99% of the leaking issues are related to the rubber seals, the rest in some mfg defect that wasn't caught.

I wouldn't worry about a roof mounted rack system.
Your talking about around #100 plus pounds spread over 4 contact points on the outer edge of roof which is the strongest part. You didn't mention if your pick-up has side rails? Just make sure you get a rack made for rails or no rails.

This is a top of the line rack but you get the idea.

Something a lot cheaper.

What kind of tonneau cover?  How confident are you with your DIY skills?  What's your budget? I installed my Harbor Freight Haul Master 800 Aluminum rack over my roll-up tonneau cover, but it took some manipulation of the tonneau cover.  I had both already, and a new truck required a retrofit.   Otherwise, you're looking at the (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) or other sliding rail mount bed racks.

Appreciate the info and tips, gentlemen. I currently have the Truxedo Gator SRX Soft Roll-Up Tonneau Cover. I'm not against some DIY fabrication, but both the Adarac system and Rhino-Rack Vortex Roof Rack look really nice! Would either option be safe for an 18-foot Kevlar canoe traveling at 80 mph without an additional bow or stern strap?

I believe in the old adage " Better safe than sorry"  Wink
I would have 2 bowline ropes on the front and rear as well as the straps on both cross racks.
You don't want the canoe to slide forward or back if the cross rack straps should loosen for any reason.

I'd get the cam-lock straps for the cross racks rather than using a rope.

I've even seen canoes with a steel cable around both cross racks and around the yoke with a padlock so know one can steal it without a lot of effort.

Something like this :

I think it's a matter of opinion, experience and comfort level.
I've seen canoes hauled both ways.
I saw a guy hauling a small aluminum fishing boat going up I-75 in Northern MI lose his boat and cause a serious accident.

He had it strapped to a rack. I don't know if it was with straps/rope but the front one broke.
The boat started bouncing up and down and broke the rear strap/rope and flew off hitting a car behind it which caused a small pile-up.

He was in the slow lane, I was behind coming in the fast lane.
This is the way I've always done it but it doesn't mean your way is wrong. I see the bow/stern straps as just an added level of security. Maybe overkill.
