Thanks for your comments, Jimbo.  I have been really enjoying this series of POD's by my husband, all taken on our penultimate canoe trip in 2012.  It was a wonderful trip with HoHo, David and Piwi, and allowed us to return to our favorite BWCA lake, Cherokee, one last time.

If you didn't know better you would think you were at the ocean with a big wave crashing in!

I can say with a certain level of confidence who probably built that (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). We added welding gloves to our equipment list around 2002 for the sole reason of moving hot boulders.

Thanks. We caught 3 about that size on that trip, two 45”, one 46”.

Typical Saturday in the BWCA. Look at all those stupid hats.

That reminds me of a trip my son and I took to the BWCA in 2021 when the border was closed and we could not get to Quetico. We were paddling across Iron lake, coming back from Curtain falls and came upon a group of girls/scouts, 4 canoes.  Every one of the occupants were wearing bug head nets as they paddled across the lake.  We exchanged hellos as we passed by.  As soon as we got out of sound range, my son and I start cracking up.  There was not a bug in sight out on the lake, but you can't be too careful I guess. It was a warm day too, so that could not have been too pleasant.  You see some strange stuff out there sometimes. 

Today's POD captures the uncanny results of a rather rare & unique tactic used in Northern Pike fishing.  It's called "Bagpipe Blasting."  A few screeching toots on the old pipes is an ancient surefire method of causing those toothy monsters to jump right out of the water to attack the offending creature.  The "fisherman" then quickly drops his instrument and attempts to grab the critter mid-flight.  It requires split-second timing and deftness of hand.  The practice was actually once a competitive sport among certain ancient clans in Scotland.  One such clan depicts this practice in the form of their very own heraldic crest badge.  Look carefully and you may see the outline of one tattooed under the shirt worn in today's POD.

The MNR is currently studying the legality of this peculiar fishing technique.  Reportedly they plan to outlaw the method, particularly during the spawning season.

Nice fish PJ. It makes me think that I need to be reminded to tip the belly (of the fish that is) slightly towards the camera. Almost too many nuances in capturing the perfect fish picture  to remember in the moment. Looks like you got most of them covered.
