One thing I learned this year (well, actually I knew it, but got it reinforced), was how important it is to properly trim a canoe while paddling on a windy lake. Day-tripping with my 12-year old in the bow, we had no heavy packs to adjust for our weight difference (about 75 pounds). We had to stop and load the bow of the canoe with rocks to keep from weather-vaning while paddling into a stiff head-wind
